At yesterday?s I/O Conference keynote Google unveiled two products that it believes will help expose the Android operating system a new audience. But while it says ?Google? on these products, both have a decidedly Apple feel to them.
First, take the Nexus 7 tablet. This new Android tablet features a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 1280 x 800 HD display and comes with either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage for $199 and $ 249 respectively. It will be the first tablet to run Google?s Android 4.1 ?Jelly Bean? operating system.
Now you might be thinking that this sounds like your standard Android tablet. Well, it is, but Google has added a little Apple twist. Normally, Android tablets are kitted out with a micro SD card slot that allows the user to easily and cheaply add extra storage to the device. This way, expanding storage even by as much as 32GB can cost less than $20. This means you?re free to buy the cheaper tablet and add as much storage as you want to it.
But not with the Nexus 7. This tablet doesn?t have a micro SD card slot so you?re stuck with whatever storage you had when you bought it.
I believe I know why Google has chosen to do this too. Given the overall spec of the Nexus 7 I?m convinced that at $199 for the 8GB model, Google is selling this tablet close to, or perhaps even at, cost. However, adding an extra 8GB of storage or the tablet doesn?t cost anywhere near the $50 premium that Google is charging. In fact, that extra 8GB of storage costs less than $10.
Google wants you to buy the more expansive version because that?s when it makes money on the sale.
Sound familiar? It should do, because this is exactly how Apple works with the iPad. Apple offers the iPad in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, with $100 price jump between each. However, it costs Apple less than $20 to bump the storage from 16GB to 32GB and about $35 to bump it from 32GB to 64GB.
So Google has adopted Apple?s strategy or charging a premium for higher storage capacities, and forces people?s hands by not offering a cheap storage expansion option via micro SD card.
As far as the Nexus Q streaming media system is concerned, Google has gone for premium all the way. While on paper the Nexus Q is similar to the Apple TV, Google has decided that it is worth a whopping $299, as opposed to the $99 that Apple charges for its media streaming device.
Charging a premium price for a product to make it seem like a luxury item as been a mainstay of Apple?s marketing strategy for years.

A fact accorded scant credence in our times is that the personal and professional can be inextricably linked in the sphere of international and foreign relations.
This was the perception distilled from an event held last week to mark the second death anniversary of veteran Sri Lankan diplomat Vernon L.B. Mendis.
The personal memoir rendered by retired civil servant M.D.D Pieris in memory of his colleague was heart-warming, to say the least. What came through very strongly is the foundation of personal goodwill, trust and affection between two of Sri Lanka?s distinguished public servants, which undoubtedly played a key role in the conduct of their official functions.
Pieris noted instances where mutual trust that was cultivated in their personal relationship became a key driver of efficiency and effectiveness when carrying out national duties: he reflected on instances where matters of state importance were discussed over a telephone call, the individual minute-taking at either end would suffice for documentation and decision ? making purposes, with no further need for exchange of notes or letters of confirmation.
This and the keynote address delivered by Ambassador Nihal Rodrigo, one time Foreign Secretary, and Secretary General of SAARC, were resonant with a key message for the public at large: foreign policy and international relations is as much about actors, personalities and relationships as it is about substantive policy and protocol.
The seventies was a time fraught with complexity for Sri Lanka?s external relations. Yet, a lesson to be learnt is that it is indeed possible to maintain productive and beneficial relations with somewhat opposing and polarized forces and ideologies: Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike was known for her close personal relationships with leaders from India, Pakistan and China which greatly contributed to Sri Lanka?s strong regional positioning.
The dividends of such close personal relationships with leaders such as Zulfikar Ali Bhutto are felt even today through the warm hospitality received when an ordinary Sri Lankan citizen visits Pakistan. At the international level, we had excellent relationships with the Middle East, the Western World, South Asia and China. Despite India, Pakistan and China having divergent foreign policy orientations, Sri Lanka managed its relationships with all three countries commendably.
The potential role played by actors in the context of international relations, in relation to Sri Lanka specifically, could be illustrated even today: Shiv Shankar Menon and Nirupama Rao, both former Indian High Commissioners to Sri Lanka and having served in China, are currently occupying positions that can have a significant bearing on Sri Lanka?s international and regional compasses. Shiv Shanker Menon is currently India?s National Security Advisor and Nirupama Roa is India?s Ambassador to the United States.
The ability of actors who have been associated with Sri Lanka in the height of conflict accords the ability to provide a graphical and realistic representation of the intricacies, nuances and complexities in situational contextual analyses. India as our immediate neighbour, and hence crucial both geographically and strategically for Sri Lanka?s international relations, coupled with India?s growing position in international affairs needs to be considered seriously.
Furthermore, living in times where the India ? China relationship is set to emerge as the most important relationship in Asia and the parallel emergence of the phenomenon of ?The Asian century? makes it imperative that we begin to acknowledge the role that actors and personalities can play in shaping international and foreign policy.
The two meetings between Shiv Shankar Menon set for later this week with President Mahinda Rajapaksa when he visits Sri Lanka will once again provide an opportunity to clear misconceptions, outline challenges and note progress while reinforcing commitments : the fact that the only meetings scheduled for the visit are with the President underscores the important role that can be played by actors in the foreign policy discourse.
As my previous article in these pages highlighting Sri Lanka?s foreign policy challenges notes, most of the Sri Lanka?s current bilateral and multilateral engagements, both regional and international, are haunted by a spectre of reconciliation and human rights concerns. A related though somewhat distinct challenge that has been highlighted is the lack of direct contact with the international human rights community and groups.
There was a time, not so long ago, for instance in the eighties, when international human rights organisations such as Amnesty International and the government of the day would, through informal channels, clarify matters especially in relation to facts and figures that would be quoted in human rights reports, and which were in turn used to draw analyses and conclusions and used for purposes of advocacy
The benefit of such direct contact and engagement is mutually beneficial for both parties ? on one hand, maintaining credibility in respect of the findings of reports of the international organizations; and giving the state party an opportunity to clear the flawed or erroneous perceptions that are usually the cause of hostile relationships.
The damage caused after misconceptions and misperceptions reach the public domain cannot adequately be rebutted through a reactionary right of reply. The need for proactive engagement on issues of genuine national interest and concern will contribute greatly to improve foreign positioning.
Furthermore, a relationship of hostility and non ? engagement between the government of the day and the international human rights community will only lead to further mistrust and will jeopardize the ultimate goal of achieving human rights protection and promotion. In this regard, the role of the diaspora in maintaining relationships with the international human rights community must also be accorded serious consideration, given the ability it has to influence the perceptions of the international human rights community in its analyses and conclusions.
A final example for consideration is the upcoming conference that is being planned by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in India for holding the Tamil Eelam Supporters? Conference (TESO) in Villupuram on August 5 2012. The Hindu reported this week the DMK President M. Karunanidhi, who is also the Chairman of TESO, saying that the venue was being prepared for the meet. The reception committee headed by DMK?s treasurer M.K. Stalin comprises five secretaries ? former DMK minister K. Ponmudi, Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary Kali Poonguntran, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi general secretary Ravikumar and DMK functionaries K.S. Radhakrishnan and advocate H.M. Jinnah. ?We want to hold the conference on the lines of the one held in Madurai last time in 1986. Besides inviting national leaders, we are planning to bring human rights activists from across the world and international leaders who are supporting the Tamil Eelam cause,? said one of the secretaries, as reported in the news item.
The role of actors, once again, becomes important at such events which will be well within the cynosure of international attention. Relationships with international human rights organisations and leaders who are specifically mentioned as invitees will have a further bearing on the presentations and projections tabled. Moreover, the personalities that represent the country?s standing on matters of national importance and interest such as reconciliation and human rights protection will be critical to the outcome at such exchanges.
Ultimately what Sri Lanka requires is a robust foreign policy grounded in strong interest ? driven national positions: the effectiveness of the policy will in turn largely depend on the actors involved in its implementation.

Bombardier Transportation, with joint venture partner New United Group, has signed a contract with CSR Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Co. Ltd., Bombardier said Thursday.
Bombardier will supply engineering, manufacturing, testing, commissioning as well as initial spare parts for the propulsion and control system of CSR?s new metro trains to be delivered to Dongguan Rail Transit Co., Ltd.
The total value of the contract is approximately $28 million U.S., with Bombardier?s share valued at $16 million U.S., the company said.
Bombardier MITRAC equipment will be delivered from Bombardier Transportation?s production facilities in Vasteras, Sweden and Changzhou, China.
The project marks the first application of MITRAC propulsion and control equipment in a Chinese metro system with an operational speed of 120 km/h.
The 37-km line is to be the first metro line in Dongguan and is expected to go into service by 2015.

Recent housing surveys are showing an uptick in home prices, particularly in cities in warm-weather ?sand states? that had been hard-hit during the housing slump, such as in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Miami, and Tampa. But some housing experts worry that the lift in prices may be temporary due to banks ?hoarding foreclosures.?
Some real estate professionals allege that the ?synthetically pumped prices? are being caused by ?banks stockpiling foreclosed properties and purposely keeping them off the market until area prices truly soar.?
For example, in Phoenix, in the ?sand state? of Arizona, home prices have been soaring the past six months.
But real estate professional Michelle Tremblay, with West USA Realty in Phoenix, tells MSNBC: ?We can see on the street what?s vacant and what?s not. We?re watching these [foreclosed and non-listed] houses just sit and rot. The banks are letting these houses just deteriorate. They?re holding them and releasing them slowly to drive the value up.?
Some markets are seeing a decrease in inventory of for-sale homes, which has helped lift home prices in some areas due to an increase in demand but limited supply. But real estate professionals say they?re concerned what will be temporary when banks start releasing more foreclosures to the market. Some have accused banks of purposely holding onto foreclosures to wait for home prices to recover so that they can get higher returns for the homes, but real estate experts are concerned that could stall the housing recovery.
However, Mark Vitner, Wells Fargo senior economist, asserts that large banks are not hoarding foreclosures and waiting for prices to perk up.
"I don't think there's any concerted effort to hold properties back from the market," Vitner told MSNBC.com. "The process to [work through and re-sell] foreclosure inventory is lengthy and there just seems to be a lot of hurdles out there to getting these properties to market. A lot of the best properties have been in foreclosure and have already sold."
Backing up that assertion, CoreLogic, a market analytics service, reports that residential shadow inventory -- which includes foreclosures -- fell to 1.5 million units in April, a 14.8 percent drop from the same month one year earlier.

(Reuters) - While South African athlete Oscar Pistorius attempts to become the first amputee runner to compete at the Olympic Games, scientists are still arguing whether his artificial limbs give him a critical advantage or not.
Pistorius, born without fibulas and who had his lower legs amputated when a baby, uses carbon fibre prosthetic running blades and is hoping to qualify for the 400 metres at the Games.
Pistorius beat the Olympic qualifying time of 45.30 in Pretoria in March but must repeat that performance in an international meeting before June 30 to make the team for the London Games which start on July 27.
Pistorius, who has a personal best is 45.07, won the 100, 200 and 400 gold medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games. He also became the first amputee to compete at the athletics world championships when he ran in Daegu, South Korea last year.
"The science is fully clear that ... Mr. Pistorius runs considerably faster with his artificial limbs," said Peter Weyand, associate professor of Applied Physiology and Biomechanics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
He said in an email that the findings, with Matthew Bundle, assistant professor at the University of Montana's Department of Health and Human Performance, also showed Pistorius had an advantage over one legged amputees.
Pistorius has already won a legal case to compete against able-bodied athletes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2008 overturned a ban which had been imposed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The court said its ruling applied only to Pistorius and only to the type of artificial limb he uses and that the IAAF had failed to prove its case.
The irony is that data used in support of Pistorius at the arbitration court came from a group which included Weyand and Bundle. They only made known their dissenting opinion later and five other scientists in the same group reject their arguments.
Icelandic company Ossur, which makes the carbon fibre limbs, and the athlete himself, are certain he has no advantage and that is it sheer hard work which is behind his success.
"I have been competing on the Ossur flex foot Cheetah since I first started in athletics in 2003," said Pistorius.
"The leg has not changed and I have not run on any other prosthetic sprinting leg. My advances in time are down to how hard I train," he added in an email.
The futuristic look of the limbs, which are curved like an upside-down hook and which affix via sockets to the stumps of his legs, have earned him the nickname "Blade Runner".
The science behind the limbs themselves is surprisingly simple and has barely changed since Pistorius first starting using them, according to Richard Hirons, a clinical prosthetist and specialist in sports feet at Ossur.
"The bottom line is that it minimises the disadvantages," Hirons told Reuters. "He is basically on stilts, he has to take that into account, he has to think about the wind, he gets nervous when it rains.
"There is a big amount of extra effort required in the upper body to generate power, lift and compensation," he added.
CHEETAH INSPIRATION
Ossur, founded in 1971, makes many limbs and works with many Paralympians, but Pistorius is their highest profile client.
The limbs he uses, called the Flex Foot Cheetah, were developed by U.S. inventor Van Philips in the 1980s.
He had the bottom half of his left leg cut off by a motor boat when water skiing, but was a keen sportsman and was frustrated by the clunky prosthetic designs then available.
Ossur bought Philips' company in 2000 in an international expansion which has made it a leading global prosthetics firm, growing well beyond its Icelandic birthplace. Sales grew from $18 million in 1991 to $401 million in 2011.
Hirons said the limbs were curved carbon fibre, which were specially designed for high impact sports. The company also produces limbs with a more gentle curve for joggers, as well as feet and legs for daily use for ordinary people.
Also for non-athletes, the future is bionic limbs, combining small electronic motors and computer sensors.
Despite the findings of Weyand and Bundle, Ossur says the carbon fibre legs are much less efficient than real legs, ankles and muscles in absorbing the impact from running and returning energy back to the runner for forward movement.
"There is a huge amount of extra effort required in the upper body to generate power and lift and compensation," Hirons said of Pistorius.
SCHOLARLY DISPUTE
Weyand and Bundle disagree, setting out their views in a debate with their five fellow scientists who worked on the Pistorius case in an issue of the journal Applied Physiology in November 2009. They say the prosthetic limbs are lighter than legs and allow Pistorius to take quicker strides.
That meant he spent more time getting tread on the ground and less in the air, which in turn meant his athleticism needed to be less than able-bodied runners to reach the same speeds.
"We conclude that the moment in athletic history when engineered limbs outperform biological limbs has already passed," the two men wrote.
In a rebuttal, the other five scientists completely disagreed, writing that it was "common sense that amputation and prosthetic legs impair force generation".
They said the rapid leg swings could have resulted from training and Pistorius having to compensate for his disability.
Weyand told Reuters that he stuck to his views, which he said were backed up by scientific data.
While the scientists debate, Pistorius is still working to achieve his Olympic goal, though has fallen short so far.
"I have worked hard to achieve the Olympic qualification time - I have already run this time twice and my aim is to consistently run within this time ahead of the Olympics and I hope to be selected to represent South Africa," he told Reuters.

ABC?s longest-running soap opera ?General Hospital? garnered five awards at the 39th annual Daytime Emmy Awards in a sold-out gala of over 1,000 attendees at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.
The show won best drama for a record 11th time; actor Anthony Geary won best lead drama actor for a record seventh time; Nancy Grahn won for best supporting actress; Jonathan Jackson won best supporting actor; and the show?s directors also won best directing team.
The 80-year-old Regis Philbin, who aired his final episode of Live with Regis and Kelly before retiring on Nov. 18, 2011, received his last honor as the show won best entertainment talk show for the first time. Before Philbin retired, he often talked about the show never winning an Emmy.
The Daytime Emmy Awards recognized outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production and were presented to individuals and programs broadcast from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the 2011 calendar year.
Despite the Emmy?s having proceeded on schedule, police were just at the famed hotel on Friday investigating the deaths of two people in what appeared to be a murder-suicide.

If you?re ready to sell your old car and upgrade to a new one you have probably already looked at the going rate for your particular car based on the Kelly Blue Book value. You?re probably also already aware that if you really want to get top dollar for your car, you may need to do some of those repairs that you put off doing before. While you may be willing to live with a cracked windshield or a faulty heater, those little car repairs left undone, can keep your car from selling in a very competitive and sluggish car market.
When you?re trying to decide what repair jobs you can skip and what ones you are absolutely going to have to get done, you should look at your car from the perspective of a potential buyer. If you own the car out right and you don?t want to put money into car repairs, the likely hood that a buyer will pay for the car and then put that money into repairs is even more minuet.
The first impression of you car will be cosmetic. You may not be able to repaint a car with a worn out paint job and repair every dent and scratch, but you can vacuum the car?s interior and shampoo the seats so they present nicely. Many consumers will judge the mechanical condition of a car based on the cosmetic condition of the car. After all if you can?t bother to pick up the trash and keep the interior clean, you probably didn?t bother to change the oil or rotate the tires either. Hopefully if you care about the appearance of your car it is a good indicator that you care about how it runs also.
Even if your not prepared to do the needed repairs yourself it?s a good idea to take the car to a mechanic for a once over. If you know what repairs your car will need down the road, it may be a selling point to potential buyers on a budget. You might also be surprised to discover that your car is in better condition than you originally thought. All of this information will come in handy when its time to show your car and the first question most buyers will ask is about the mechanical condition of the car.
So if you?re ready to sell your old car, make sure you know what car repairs need to be done and what they will cost so you can either do them yourself or calculate them into the selling price of the car.

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Cyprus on Monday became the fifth eurozone country to request financial aid from its partners in the European currency union as it struggles to shore up its banks, which took heavy losses on Greek debt.
The island nation's government said in a terse statement that it required assistance following "negative spillover effects through its financial sector, due to its large exposure in the Greek economy."
Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou wouldn't say how much Cyprus would ask from the European bailout fund, saying that the amount would be subject to negotiations in the coming days. The 27 leaders of the European Union will meet in Brussels on Thursday.
Stefanou said that despite its demand for European aid, the Cypriot government would continue negotiations for a possible loan from a country outside the EU, such as Russia or China.
"One doesn't preclude the other," Stefanou told the Associated Press. "Our efforts to secure a bilateral loan will continue."
Cyprus is scrambling to find about ?1.8 billion ($2.26 billion) - or about 10 percent of its gross domestic product - by a June 30 deadline to recapitalize its second largest lender, Cyprus Popular Bank. The lender is the most heavily exposed of the country's banks to Greek government debt, which lost most of its value this year in a writedown.
Over the past weeks it became clear that the bank would not find the money from the private sector and would need to get it from the government, itself strapped for cash and unable to raise money in bond markets, where its borrowing rates are too high. Cyprus, which has been surviving off a Russian loan so far this year, has been debating whether to ask for European aid or another loand from Russia or China ? or a combination of both.
Earlier Monday, ratings agency Fitch became the third agency to downgrade Cyprus' credit rating to junk status, estimating that the island will need another ?4 billion ($5 billion) to recapitalize its banking sector. It cited the banks' exposure to Greek debt as well as a rise in bad loans over the last year as the Cypriot economy has shrunk and unemployment has risen to record levels.

TOKYO (AP) ? Long-time Japanese rivals Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. are working together to develop next-generation TV panels called OLEDs in a reversal of decades of rivalry as they try to catch up with South Korea's Samsung Electronics.
The companies said in a joint statement Monday they will share core technologies to develop OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, panels. They are aiming for low-cost mass production by 2013.
Both Sony and Panasonic have posted big losses after falling behind Samsung Electronics Co. and other Asian rivals in TVs. The joining of forces marks a departure from a long rivalry and highlights the pressure that Japanese manufacturers face to catch-up with Samsung in TVs.
Samsung is planning to start selling TVs with big OLED screens later this year. OLEDs use a different technology from Liquid Crystal Displays and delivers very clear, vivid imagery.
Fitch Ratings said the Sony-Panasonic tie-up underlined "the fall of Japanese tech companies," as such a tie-up was previously "unthinkable."
"Japanese OLED investment is better late than never," said Alvin Lim, Associate Director at Fitch. "While consumer demand for OLED is still unproven, without investment Japanese manufacturers could become stranded in the TV market should this technology become mainstream."
Sony was the first in the world to sell an OLED TV, with its 11-inch model in 2007, but it wasn't a strong seller, partly because of its small size.
Sony buys liquid-crystal displays from other manufacturers. It ended its joint-venture with Samsung to make LCDs earlier this year as panel prices fell and it became more cost-efficient to buy from other makers.
Both Sony and Panasonic reported record losses for the fiscal year ended March 31. They took a battering from plunging prices and a soaring yen, which puts the Japanese at a disadvantage against the Koreans, in price competitiveness.
Analysts say the Japanese could also be hit by Apple Inc.'s foray into TVs that may come in a couple of years. Apple has already eroded the profitability of the Japanese electronics makers with its hit iPod, iPhone and iPad devices.

SARJEH, Syria - Rebel commander Ahmed Eissa al-Sheikh keeps a paper on his desk bearing the names of the dead from his brigade. The first 16 are neatly typed below a Quranic verse extolling martyrdom. The next 14 are handwritten and crammed into the margin, because the paper is full.
Al-Sheikh, an Islamist with a long black beard and grey fatigues, runs the Falcons of Damascus group from the mayor's office in his village, which his fighters have taken over. The list is a constant reminder of al-Sheikh's personal score with the Syrian regime: 20 of the dead are his relatives, including three brothers and his 16-year-old son, all killed fighting Syrian forces in the last year.
One of northern Syria's most powerful and best-armed commanders, Al-Sheikh boasts more than 1,000 fighters, and they don't shy away from rougher tactics themselves. They have released prisoners in bomb-laden cars and then detonated them at army checkpoints ? turning the drivers into unwitting suicide bombers.
Most of their weapons are booty, including at least two anti-aircraft guns, some anti-tank missiles and one tank, but they buy arms with donations from "honourable businessmen." Although al-Sheikh, who ran a grocery store before the uprising, wouldn't disclose the source or amount, he gets enough to pay some of his men monthly salaries of about $25, slightly more for those with wives and children. His fighters say the cash comes from Syrian expatriates and other Arabs. He was heard on the phone thanking a group in Bahrain.
"God willing, Syria will not bow to anyone but Allah after the regime falls," he said.

Al-Sheikh is one face of the rebel movement in Syria. There are many more.
During two weeks in northern Syria, three Associated Press journalists counted more than 20 rebel groups, with anywhere from fewer than 100 to more than 1,000 fighters each. They go by names like the Idlib Martyrs Brigade and the Shield of the Revolution, and while all share a deep hatred of President Bashar Assad's regime, their unity stops there.
Simply put, no one is in charge.
This comes at a time when efforts to end 15 months of strife in Syria are collapsing, and the rebel movement has taken the lead in the struggle against Assad. Some countries have talked of boosting the rebels' capabilities against the regime, and U.S. officials have told the AP that U.S. operatives are sifting among the rebel groups to determine which should receive arms from other Arab nations.
Rebel co-ordination rarely extends beyond neighbouring towns and villages and never to the provincial or national level. Many rebels don't even know the commanders in towns two hours away.
While the regime has been brutal, so have some of the rebels ? another cause of concern for the West.
Opposition activists filter most information about the rebels sent outside the country, making it hard to get an accurate picture. But several groups said they had sent captured soldiers "to Cyprus," which the rebels use as a euphemism for execution usually by gunfire.
One group said it had killed two brothers caught collaborating with the regime ? one during interrogation, the other by firing squad.
Rebels have scored small victories against regime forces throughout Syria's northern Idlib province. Armed with bought, looted or homemade weapons, they have destroyed government army posts and littered main highways with charred army vehicles.
In the countryside, they roam freely in much more territory than was previously known, their bearded, camouflaged gunmen on motorcycles zipping through strings of towns and villages with no remaining police or security presence. Children often hail the fighters with V-for-victory signs and calls of "May God protect you!"
But Syria's army retains a chokehold on many large towns and cities with tanks, attack helicopters and heavy artillery, weapons that the rebels' current arms can't challenge.
Indeed, more than two dozen rebel commanders, fighters and activists said that without better arms they can do no more than chip away at the regime ? a recipe for a long, deadly insurgency.
"If we get military aid, the end will come quickly," said Ahmed Abdel-Qader, a rebel co-ordinator in the village of Koreen. "If not, we have no idea how this will end. We are here. We're not going back. God will decide the rest."
Even groups associated with the Free Syrian Army, which claims to represent the armed opposition, bemoan the failure of its Turkey-based leadership to deliver aid. While they wait, most rely on guerrilla tactics.
One afternoon, 50 fighters in a vast olive grove crawled under barbed wire, leaped over oil drums and dove through flaming hoops in training for future attacks. Most were in their 20s and 30s and had fled the provincial capital of Idlib when the army seized it in March. Their rifles can't match the tanks guarding the city, and they can't afford better weapons.
Commander Maan Dahnin said a Kalashnikov rifle now costs $1,500 and bullets are $4 each. That's why when they lined up for target practice, most fighters fired only a few times.
Some weapons come from neighbouring Iraq, though many are duds, and some from Turkey, he said. The best come from corrupt officers in the Syrian army itself.
"There are those who worry that the regime is going to fall, so they want to fill their pockets first," Dahnin said.
For now, his group's 1,000 men never gather in one place, so that if they are shelled or come under fire, not everyone will die. Meanwhile, they focus on roadside bombs built with dynamite, sugar and fertilizer and detonated by remote control.
Like most rebel commanders, Dahnin said his group gets no outside support.
"Here's the biggest proof," he said, pointing to a fighter wearing plastic flip-flops. "He's only good for one thing: toothpaste advertisements," he said, prying open the man's mouth to reveal a row of rotten teeth.
The conflict in Syria has already killed more than 14,000 people and appears headed for civil war. The Syrian government has ignored popular demands for reform, instead blaming the violence on armed gangs and foreign-backed terrorists. Others have warned against an influx of Islamists. The AP journalists saw no evidence of foreign fighters.
The uprising reached Idlib in April 2011, about a month after Syrian protesters inspired by other Arab Spring revolts first took to the streets and faced violent security crackdowns.
The protests started small in Ariha, a busy commercial centre on the face of a round-topped mountain, but residents were shocked when regime forces shot and killed five protesters in one day, said Khalid Naif, a doctor. Many more people then joined in, armed first with hunting guns and later with attack rifles.
A year ago, the army surrounded the city and took over a downtown building, paralyzing the city centre, Naif said. He easily named many of the dozens of people he has treated for gunshot and shrapnel wounds since. Others died before reaching the clinic.
Early this month, when a military convoy arrived to quash the city's opposition, rebel fighters blew up tanks and armoured cars in a hail of gunfire and grenades and stormed the army position downtown.
Weeks later, battle scars remain. Three destroyed tanks sit in the main boulevard, their tops blown off like bottle caps. The former army post is charred black, and walls of nearby buildings are pockmarked with bullet holes.
Graffiti on one wall reads, in English, "The people wants SOS." Elsewhere: "We bow only for God."
But the rebel victory was limited. Some stores have reopened and shoppers have returned to downtown, but a ring of army checkpoints restricts movement in and out, forcing many residents to sneak out on foot. Military helicopters and snipers still target the city, wounding more people every week.
The city's rebel commander, Jamal Akta, who ran a unisex barber shop before the uprising, said the battle had killed 10 civilians and no rebels. While proud of the fight, he said his men could do no more.
"If we get more weapons, we can get rid of all the checkpoints," he said. "But the ammunition we have now is enough to defend the city, no more than that."
A ring of checkpoints with a central army post full of snipers and armoured vehicles also strangles Khan Sheikhoun, a dusty, sun-baked city further south, on the country's main north-south highway. Local rebels can't clear out the army, so they blast military vehicles on the highway with rocket-propelled grenades. Two destroyed armoured vehicles, one still on its trailer, now lie in the road, and local fighters say the army has changed its route.
"We can't face the regime as an army face to face, so we have to fight like street gangs," said Waddah Sirmani, head of one of the town's half-dozen rebel brigades.
Fighters have also surrounded the central base and fire on supply vehicles to keep the soldiers inside hungry and short of ammunition, he said.
"You could say that those soldiers are imprisoned among us," said activist Hisham Nijim.
Almost all the rebels the AP journalists met were from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority, and many consider the fight a religious cause. When asked what they are fighting for, most said they are fed up with corruption, harassment by security services and a system that gives preference to members of the ruling Baath party and the Alawite sect, to which Assad belongs. The word they used most often was dignity.
"If I go to the beach, I don't want an Alawite to call me a dog and I can't respond," said Ahmed Salim, 27, who left the police for the rebels in October. "I don't want to be treated like an animal. I want to be treated like a human."
Most fighters said they did not target other sects, only those who had fought for the regime.
There was little evidence of rebel attacks on civilians, but they were often merciless with regime troops. For most, the fight to topple Assad has become personal after they have been chased from their cities, their friends and relatives killed. Many frequently flip through "martyr" photos on their cellphones for inspiration.
One night at al-Sheikh's headquarters in Sarjeh, a group of fighters flipped through brigade photos on a laptop.
"Martyr, martyr, martyr, martyr, martyr," they said, pointing out those who had died fighting.
Videos of the group's attacks showed roadside bombs destroying tanks and flipping over army buses, as Islamic chanting played in the background. In one video, a booby-trapped van sped toward a checkpoint and blew up, splattering two soldiers into nearby trees.
The group was still high on a recent attack that had destroyed a military camp nearby. In the end, they photographed the dead bodies of 35 soldiers, drove off a tank they now park under a tree in the village graveyard and held trials for five captured soldiers. All were found guilty of killing other Syrians.
"They travelled to Cyprus," al-Sheikh said with a grin. "On a fast plane."

Muslim Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi was declared on Sunday as the first president of Egypt since a popular uprising ousted Hosni Mubarak, capping a tumultuous and divisive election.
Morsi, who ran against Mubarak-era premier Ahmed Shafiq, won 51.73 percent of the vote after a race that polarised the nation.
"The winner of the election for Egyptian president on June 16-17 is Mohamed Morsi Eissa al-Ayat," said the head of the electoral commission, Faruq Sultan.
Morsi's victory marks the first time Islamists have taken the presidency of the Arab World?s most populous nation, but recent moves by the ruling military to consolidate its power have rendered the post toothless.
Morsi will give a televised address at 1800 GMT, spokesman Yasser Ali told AFP.
Tens of thousands of Morsi supporters celebrated in Cairo's Tahrir Square, waving flags and posters of the Islamist leader, who was jailed during the uprising that overthrew Mubarak early last year.
"God is greatest" and "down with military rule" they chanted as some set off firecrackers minutes after the electoral commission formally declared the result.
Across Cairo, cars sounded their horns and chants of "Morsi, Morsi" were heard.
Morsi won with 13,230,131 votes against Shafiq's 12,347,380, Sultan said. The election, in which more than 50 million voters were eligible to cast their ballot, saw a 51.8 percent turnout.
Morsi resigned from his posts in the Muslim Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party, which he headed, after he was declared the winner, the Brotherhood announced.
Military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who took power when Hosni Mubarak was forced to resign in February last year, congratulated Morsi on his win, state television announced.
And the interim head of the Coptic church, many of whose faithful have feared the rise of Islamists, also congratulated Morsi.
Shafiq supporters who had gathered to hear the result with his campaign team in the suburbs of Cairo were devastated by the result.
Some women screamed and others cried as several men held their heads between their hands in despair.
"It's a very sad day for Egypt. I don't think Morsi is the winner. I'm very sad that Egypt will be represented by this man and this group," Shafiq supporter Maged told AFP.
The capital was tense before the announcement, with the city's notoriously busy streets deserted and shops and schools closed.
Extra troops and police were deployed as military helicopters flew overhead.
The road to parliament was closed to traffic, and security was tightened around vital establishments as Egyptians waited nervously for the result.
The election has polarised the nation, dividing those who feared a return to the old regime under Shafiq from others who wanted to keep religion out of politics and who fear the Brotherhood would stifle personal freedoms.
Shafiq ran on a strong law-and-order platform, pledging to restore security and stability. He is himself a retired general, but as a Mubarak-era minister he is reviled by the activists who spearheaded the 2011 revolt.
President-elect Morsi was the Islamists' fallback representative after their deputy leader Khairat El-Shater was disqualified.
In campaigning he sought to allay the fears of secular groups and the sizeable Coptic Christian minority by promising a diverse and inclusive political system.
On Saturday, two massive Cairo protests duelled for supremacy.
Thousands of Brotherhood supporters thronged Tahrir Square, with hundreds spending the night there. "Morsi, Morsi, God is greatest," they chanted.
Across the city in the Nasr City neighbourhood, thousands of Shafiq supporters held up pictures of him and of Tantawi, chanting: "The people and the army are one."
"Down with the rule of the Supreme Guide," they shouted, referring to the head of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Both Morsi and Shafiq had claimed victory in the election for a successor to Mubarak, and tensions heightened after the electoral commission delayed announcing the official outcome.
The delay in announcing the result of the June 16-17 run-off, initially scheduled for Thursday, had raised raised suspicions that the outcome of the election was being negotiated rather than counted.
On Friday, the SCAF warned it would deal "with utmost firmness and strength" with any attempts to harm public interests.
The Brotherhood warned against tampering with the election results, but also said it had no intention of instigating violence.
It has rejected a constitutional declaration by the military that strips away any gains made by the Islamist group since the popular uprising which forced Mubarak to stand down in February last year.
The document dissolves the Islamist-led parliament and gives the army a broad say in government policy and control over the new constitution. It was adopted just days after a justice ministry decree granted the army powers of arrest.

In 2008 scientists sent the suitcase-sized Expose-E experiment package to the Space Station filled with organic compounds and living organisms to test their reaction to outer space.
When astronauts venture on a spacewalk, hours are spent preparing protective suits to survive the hostile conditions. No effort was made to protect the bacteria, seeds, lichen and algae attached to the outside of the Space Station, however.
"We are exploring the limits of life," explains ESA's Ren? Demets.
Our atmosphere does a wonderful job of protecting life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV rays and keeping temperatures relatively stable.
In contrast, the space samples endured the full power of the Sun's rays. The samples were insulated somewhat by the Space Station but still had to cope with temperatures changing from -12?C to +40?C over 200 times as they orbited Earth.
The samples returned to Earth in 2009 and the results have now been published in a special issue of the journal Astrobiology.
Lichen have proven to be tough cookies -- back on Earth, some species continue to grow normally.
Ren? explains, "These organisms go into a dormant state waiting for better conditions to arrive."
The lichen have attracted interest from cosmetic companies. They can survive the full power of the Sun for 18 months, so knowing more could lead to new ingredients for sunscreen.
Living organisms surviving in open space supports the idea of 'panspermia' -- life spreading from one planet to another, or even between solar systems.
It seems possible that organisms could colonize planets by hitching rides on asteroids. ESA is probing this intriguing theory further on future Station missions with different samples.

BELLEFONTE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - The jury in the child sex abuse trial of Jerry Sandusky began deliberations on Thursday but without hearing a shocking new accusation from Sandusky's adopted son that he, too, was abused by the former Penn State assistant football coach.
Prosecutors told the jury that Sandusky was a "serial predatory pedophile" who targeted young boys yearning for a father figure, while the defense said he had been ruined by overzealous prosecutors and false accusers hoping for a payday from civil lawsuits.
As jurors started their deliberation, a news report surfaced that Matt Sandusky, 33, had met with prosecutors this week to tell them he had been molested by his adoptive father.
Matt Sandusky, who was adopted as an adult after living with the family as a foster child, had denied until now he was ever sexually abused, according to The Patriot-News of Harrisburg, which won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the case.
Matt Sandusky's lawyer, Andrew Shubin, told the paper his client met with prosecutors this week, after the prosecution had already rested its case.
"Matt Sandusky contacted us and requested our advice and assistance in arranging a meeting with prosecutors to disclose for the first time in this case that he is a victim of Jerry Sandusky's abuse," Shubin said in a statement to the media co-signed by lawyer Justine Andronici. "This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt."
After several hours of deliberations, jurors told Judge John Cleland they wanted to rehear the testimony of Mike McQueary, the assistant coach who testified he witnessed Sandusky molesting a young boy in the showers of the Penn State football house in 2001.
The jury also asked to rehear the testimony of Jonathan Dranov, who heard an account from McQueary shortly after the shower incident about what he saw.
Because of the late hour, the judge told jurors they could hear the two hours of audio recordings on Friday, and he dismissed them for the night.
CLOSING ARGUMENTS
Earlier at Centre County Court, lawyers for both sides made their final arguments to the jury of seven women and five men deciding the fate of Sandusky, 68, who is accused of abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period, sometimes in Pennsylvania State University locker rooms.
"I feel as if I have pieces of 10 souls in my pockets," prosecutor Joseph McGettigan told jurors before walking across the courtroom to stand next to a seated Sandusky, who appeared startled as he looked over his shoulder.
"Give them back their souls," McGettigan told the jury.
Jurors, who are sequestered during deliberations, earlier heard from Sandusky attorney Joe Amendola, who said in closing arguments the onetime football coach had been ruined by overzealous prosecutors and false allegations by accusers hoping for a big payday down the road from civil lawsuits.
When the criminal charges were filed late last year, "Mr. Sandusky's world came to an end, his wife's world came to the end, his children's world came to an end," Amendola said.
"I submit to you they were going to get him come hell or high water, even if they had to coach witnesses," Amendola said.
A long line of spectators waited outside the courthouse on Thursday to get a seat for final arguments in an explosive case that has put renewed attention on the issue of child sex abuse in the United States and prompted the firing in November of Penn State President Graham Spanier and legendary head football coach Joe Paterno.
Paterno, who won more games than any major college football coach, died of lung cancer in January.
SANDUSKY DOES NOT TESTIFY
The defense wrapped up its case on Wednesday after little more than two days of testimony without calling Sandusky to the stand. He faces more than 500 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
One of the spectators, Kay Reyes, a retired Latin teacher, said she had driven from her home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with her daughter, a lawyer, to attend the trial.
"If this didn't involve famous people, this would be a slam dunk for the prosecution," said Reyes, who was carrying a sign that said "The Victims = True American Heroes."
The accusers "are the ones who throughout all this have shown bravery, valor and dignity," Reyes said.
Eight accusers, now aged 18 to 28, testified for the prosecution last week. They described in often graphic detail about meeting Sandusky as boys through his charity, the Second Mile, and then being abused by groping, shared showers, and oral and anal sex.
McGettigan, the prosecutor, rejected Amendola's claims the alleged victims were seeking a big payday and conspiring with prosecutors and police investigators.
He said such a conspiracy would have had to start in 1994, the date of the first alleged abuse, and continued for years.
"There are only two possible constructs - either we are conspirators and corrupt or we are hoodwinked," McGettigan said of the prosecution team.
Earlier on Thursday, Cleland threw out three charges against Sandusky. The former coach still faces 48 criminal charges related to child sex abuse allegations.
Cleland said the testimony of one of the victims, Number 4, failed to support two of the counts, while a third count was duplicative.
