In these uncertain economic times, a sponsorship announcement was enough to bring out NASCAR's president.

Mike Helton was on hand Friday when Martin Truex and primary sponsor NAPA agreed to a three-year contract extension with Michael Waltrip Racing.

''Thank you for believing in our sport,'' Helton told a top NAPA official who was on hand for the announcement.

The team has made dramatic improvement this season, going into Sunday's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway fifth in the Sprint Cup standings and looking to give Waltrip a spot in the Chase for the championship for the first time as a car owner. The team's other full-time driver, Clint Bowyer, is sixth in the points and also positioned to lock up a Chase berth.

''Our cars are performing well,'' said Waltrip, who also field a third car that he shares with Mark Martin and Brian Vickers. ''I'm very optimistic about who we are. This news is just confidence. I know when Martin puts on that NAPA uniform today he is going to feel better than he ever has about who he is and where we're going.''

NAPA has a long history sponsoring NASCAR and decided to stay on board in a major role, rather than a part-time deal that would've required Waltrip to seek additional backing. The announcement was good news for NASCAR, which has watched some of its biggest teams struggle to land full-season sponsorships since the economic downturn.

''We're right there,'' Waltrip said. ''It will be great for the guys on the team to not have to worry about where their job is going to be next year. We're very excited about that and are looking forward to what we can do together.''

Truex approached team co-owner Rob Kaufmann early in the season about a contract extension.

''I think the key thing is Martin's attitude toward getting it done,'' Waltrip said. ''He came to Rob in April and said, `I want to drive this car next year. Y'all figure it out. I'm your guy.' That's the kind of guy you want driving your race car.''

Truex is confident of winning his first Cup championship, perhaps as soon as this year.

''My biggest fear this year was this deal falling apart and us not being able to realize our potential,'' he said. ''I feel like we're not where we can get to yet, and I'm very, very happy that we'll be able to continue down that path.''

Truex pointed to the closeness of the team, saying he wanted to remain with an organization that valued his input.

''The guys have given me a great opportunity here to be part of a team,'' he said. ''I don't go home on Sunday night and sit there and wait for them to build my race cars better or bring me better stuff on Thursday. I go to the shop on Monday and I'm part of a team and part of building that process. It's been an awesome road.''

A road that will go on for at least three more years.

Russian tycoon Abramovich wins London court battle

LONDON (AP) ? Self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky lost his multibillion-dollar legal battle against fellow Russian mogul Roman Abramovich on Friday after a British judge ruled that he didn't tell the truth in the clash over vast oil wealth.

The case in London's High Court sparked broad interest because of its focus on the two oligarchs' personal and business relationship in the chaotic days of post-Soviet Russia. The weeks of testimony included juicy details about their jet-set lifestyles that included yachts, luxury vacations and high-roller spending.

The 64-year-old Berezovsky, a former Kremlin power broker who fell out with Russian President Vladimir Putin, alleged that Abramovich had betrayed and intimidated him into selling his stakes in the Russian oil company Sibneft vastly beneath their true value. Berezovsky had sought more than 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) in damages.

Abramovich had denied the charges.

On Friday, Judge Elizabeth Gloster scathingly dismissed Berezovsky's case, calling him "an unimpressive, and inherently unreliable, witness, who regarded truth as a transitory, flexible concept, which could be molded to suit his current purposes."

"I regret to say that the bottom line of my analysis of Mr. Berezovsky's credibility is that he would have said almost anything to support his case," Gloster said in a 38-page summary of her judgment.

In contrast, she found the 45-year-old Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea football club, to be "a truthful, and on the whole reliable, witness."

Berezovsky, who had alleged blackmail and breach of contract, shook his head in court Friday as his defeat became clear. Abramovich did not attend.

Outside the court, Berezovsky accused Gloster of rewriting Russian history.

"I am absolutely amazed by what happened today," he told reporters. "Sometimes I have the impression that Putin himself wrote this judgment."

A statement issued by Abramovich's representatives said his position had been "comprehensively vindicated by the court."

A mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, Berezovsky amassed his wealth during Russia's privatization of state assets in the early 1990s. In return for backing former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained powerful political connections and opportunities to buy state assets at knockdown prices.

Berezovsky said he mentored Abramovich, treating him like a son, and founded Sibneft with him and a third partner. Berezovsky claimed that the friendship faltered when he fell out with Putin, at which point Abramovich "intimidated" him into selling his Sibneft shares, at a loss of almost $6 billion.

Abramovich said he had paid more than $2.5 billion to Berezovsky for his services as his "political godfather" and reluctantly funded Berezovsky's extravagant lifestyle of yachts and vacation homes because he feared retaliation.

The judge concluded that the deal between the two men was that in return for substantial cash payments, Abramovich and Sibneft would enjoy Berezovsky's political patronage and influence, "which was indispensible to the construction of any major business in the conditions of the 1990s."

The judge rejected Berezovksy's claims that he was threatened by Putin and Alexander Voloshin, a Putin ally, to coerce him to sell his Sibneft stake. She also rejected Berezovsky's claim that he had an agreement which gave him an interest in any aluminum holdings that Abramovich might acquire after 1999.

The case hinged on four alleged oral agreements and almost every aspect of those alleged deals was in dispute, the judge said.

"Significantly there were no contemporaneous notes, memoranda or other documents recording the making of these alleged agreements or referring to their terms," the judge said.

"Such documents as were relied upon by Mr. Berezovsky as circumstantial evidence supporting his case, were usually (but not invariably) considerably later in origin than the alleged agreements."

The burden fell on Berezovsky to convince the court that the agreements had been made, "not for Mr. Abramovich to convince the court otherwise," the judge said.

Gloster was scathing about Berezovsky's credibility.

"At times the evidence which he gave was deliberately dishonest; sometimes he was clearly making his evidence up as he went along in response to the perceived difficulty in answering the questions in a manner consistent with his case; at other times, I gained the impression that he was not necessarily being deliberately dishonest, but had deluded himself into believing his own version of events," she said.

"He departed from his own previous oral evidence, sometimes within minutes of having given it," she added.

Berezovsky said he hadn't decided whether to appeal.

"Life is life," he said. "Now I know what means English court better than before."

Microsoft reveals Windows 8 upgrade pricing for the UK

Microsoft has confirmed the price most UK users will need to pay to upgrade to Windows 8 ? ?24.99.

The cost of the UK upgrade, which allows users to download a copy of Windows 8 Pro, is pegged at an almost identical level to the US, where an upgrade will set consumers back $39.99.

Upgrade prices for Windows 8 in the UK and Europe have been announced.

There's a slight discount for UK users who have recently bought, or are planning to buy a Windows 7 PC, however: anyone buying a Windows 7 machine between 2 June, 2012 and 31 January, 2013 will be able to get their hands on Windows 8 for a tenner less, at ?14.99.?

US users will get to pay less though, with an upgrade from Windows 7 at just $14.99 ? one-third less than the UK price. European users will also get a better deal than their UK counterparts, paying ?14.99 ? around ?11.85.

The offer applies to the Home Basic; Home Premium; Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows 7, but not the Starter edition. More details are available on the Windows Upgrade site.

Windows 8 will go on general release on 26 October, three days before the launch of Windows Phone 8.

The housing market recovery appears to be sustainable.

According to the Federal Housing Finance Agency?s Home Price Index, home prices rose by a seasonally-adjusted 0.7 percent?between May and June 2012.?The index is now up 3.0% over the past 12 months, and made its biggest quarterly gain since 2005 last quarter.

The FHFA?s Home Price Index measures home price changes through successive home sales for homes whose mortgages are backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, and for which the property type is categorized as a ?single-family residence?.

Condominiums, multi-unit homes and homes with jumbo mortgages, for example, are excluded from the Home Price Index, as are all-cash home sales.

June?s HPI gives buyers and seller reason to cheer, but it?s important to remember that the Home Price Index ? like so many other home valuation trackers ? has a severe, built-in flaw. The HPI uses aged data. It?s nearly September, yet we?re talking numbers from June.

Data that?s two months old has limited meaning in today?s housing market. It?s reflective of the housing market as it looked in the past.

And, even then, to?categorize the HPI as ?two months old? may be a stretch.?Because it often takes 45-60 days to close on a home sale, the home sale prices as reported by the July Home Price Index are the result of purchase contracts written from as far back as February 2012.

Buyers and sellers in search of real-time home price data, in other words, won?t get it from the FHFA.

The Home Price Index is a useful housing market gauge for law-makers and economists. It highlights long-term trends in housing which can assist in allocating resources to a particular policy or project. For home buyers and sellers , however, it?s decidedly less useful. Real-time data is what?s most important.

If you're a student, you may have harbored the fantasy of learning lessons while you sleep. Who wouldn't want to stick on a pair of headphones, grab some shut-eye with a lesson about, say, Chinese history playing in his ears ? and wake up with newly acquired knowledge of the Ming Dynasty?

Sadly, it doesn't work. The history lesson either keeps you from going to sleep, or it doesn't ? in which case you don't learn it.

But researchers may have taken the first baby step to making the fantasy come true: In an unusual experiment published in Nature Neuroscience, researchers Anat Arzi, Ilana Hairston and others showed that people are capable of learning simple lessons while fast asleep.

?

The researchers sprayed volunteers with pleasant and unpleasant smells while they were fast asleep. Exactly like people who are awake, the sleeping volunteers took bigger breaths when there was a pleasant smell and a smaller breath when there was an unpleasant smell.

The researchers also paired each kind of smell with a particular sound. After repeated pairings of, say, a pleasant smell with a high-pitched beep, the researchers played the high-pitched beep without the smell: They found the volunteers took a big gulp of air. At least subconsciously, in other words, they were expecting the pleasant smell.

The researchers similarly paired an unpleasant smell ? rotting fish ? with another kind of tone. After repeated pairings, the tone alone caused the volunteers to take a smaller breath.

The phenomenon is known as conditioning, a simple form of learning made famous by Ivan Pavlov and his dog.

When the volunteers woke up, the researchers played the different tones to them. They found that the high-pitched beep caused the volunteers to take a big breath and the low-pitched beep caused the volunteers to take a small breath.

In other words, the conditioning lesson learned while the volunteers were asleep stayed with them after they awoke. Interestingly, the volunteers had no conscious recollection of having learned anything while they were sleeping.

Hairston said the research could help unlock the effects that sleep has on different brain processes. It's been known for a while that a nap can help cement things you've learned; Hairston said the sleep mechanisms that consolidate knowledge may explain why volunteers in the current experiment were able to bring what they learned during sleep into waking hours.

Practical applications of the conditioning technique are still far off, of course. But speculating about potential future uses, Hairston said: "A medical student can learn a list of body organs. You can perhaps pair different organs with smells. So you pair the thalamus with the smell of lemon, and the hypothalamus with the smell of orange blossom. When you wake up, you will have a better recollection of that list!"

Two years ago, while living in India, I decided to change up my life a little and take a trip to England. Alone. To put all disclaimers in their rightful place, I was to primarily stay with family friends and use their home as a base to explore nearby cities on my own. For a whole month, I relied on mostly myself for company and smarts and plunged into the heart of London, took in the spires and tradition of Oxford, inspected the Georgian architecture of the marvel that is Bath, took winding walks through the village of Eynsford, and shared my discoveries, delight and qualms with the voices in my head.

I dined alone. Watched the world go by. The London tube map was my new BFF, as I hopped on and off the Underground trains like a pro, frequently directing tourists who assumed I lived there. I visited friends all over the city and outside of it. Gazed silently at the works in the Tate Modern. Watched foxes on my long walks in Kent. And sat on abandoned benches by the Darent river, observing the flight landings of ducks. It was then that I realized I had given myself an invaluable gift in time and space alone, and the opportunity to have this adventure with myself.

For women growing up in India, solitary travel is undertaken rarely, and only with a specific purpose. Certainly not encouraged or applauded, a woman alone has more analogies ascribed to her than I?d care to thumb through a hackneyed Bollywood script for. ?But for this little path off the oft-taken road, I believe I have my mother to thank: my strong-willed, independent, and incredibly capable mother, who took frequent trips out of Bombay to first purchase, and then painstakingly do up our family holiday homes outside the city. She thought nothing of being the sole resident of a residential complex in a one-horse town in the early 90s, replete with power cuts and midnight robbers. She spent nights up alone with workmen getting things fixed or reinstalled, taking the 2 am state transport bus back to us in our family bungalow 20 kilometers away. She makes my safe and ?solitary? jaunts abroad look like a trip to Disneyland, with bodyguards and fairy godmother in tow.

But solo travel does so much more to women?s psyches than put us at risk, real or imagined. It enables us to see ourselves as people, divorced of our gender tag, pushes us to take charge of our lives, our journey, our plans, and imbues us with confidence and the ability to take decisions for ourselves, attributes that sometimes take a backseat once we?re comfortably ensconced in a relationship and become cognitively lazy.

I admit to doing it myself. That first trip I took was as an unmarried woman. Two years down the line, as independent as I usually am, I had developed a travel comfort zone that I was reluctant to step out of: my globe-trotting spouse is such a natural when it comes to airports and the whole travel shebang, that it was just easier to follow him blindly as he made bookings, herded me through airport procedures and generally made life very cushy. There was no obvious need for me to want things differently.

Except, I didn?t quite want to lose the girl who had breezed through immigration turnstiles and taken off to her upcountry homes without a second thought as a teenager. I still remembered the feeling of being by myself on a train chugging through the Indian countryside, the wind in my face and the stench of the latrine in my nostrils. I didn?t want to forget what it felt like to rush up to a ticket counter 10 minutes before the train?s departure and hop on as it made clanging, warning noises. I wanted to assure myself that flying solo to the other side of the world was still the piece of cake it was throughout my 20s. It?s way too convenient being one half of a couple, with emotional and physical support within arm?s reach. Or maybe I just like to make things difficult for myself.

?while it?s certainly more fun to share discoveries and experiences with my spouse, I also greatly enjoy my own company and the opportunity to plan (or not) my days, keeping just myself in mind.

So this past April, despite the ease of a caring and available spouse, I planned a little jaunt across a few countries where I would be forced to depend solely on my own resources and imagination. Again, I?d like to clarify that I hardly went traipsing off to Antarctica or roamed the savannah. It was all very civil, European, and with the buffer of close family friends moderately within reach if I ran into anything remotely resembling trouble. But even the chance to figure out things on my own if plans went awry or to change up my itinerary based on a whim was one I wanted to grab with both hands. And I did. And concluded that while it?s certainly more fun to share discoveries and experiences with my spouse, I also greatly enjoy my own company and the opportunity to plan (or not) my days, keeping just myself in mind.

It?s not always effortless. I frequently push myself, while my alter ego in its suede-cushioned comfort zone begs to be left alone. But it does me good. Restores my sense of me. From the days before I was half a pair of scissors. And I return fortified, and bursting to tell my spouse how delightful (and comfortable) my life is with him in it. He misses me, of course, but understands, acknowledges, and supports this need. And is man enough to keep our home running smoothly without me. All around, a neat win-win.

So here?s a little promise I have made myself : I will try to maintain the spirit of independent travel in the future, even if it means a short solo trip every other year. It doesn?t have to be elaborate or far-flung. The point is to experience life alone and connect with myself. So I don?t wake up one morning some years down the line, in a mad rush to whip up breakfast, and not recognize the woman in the mirror. I owe it to her, and I owe it to the marriage I vowed to be strong and equal in.

All too frequently, we permit life patterns to cement our ways and take the easier route, but then have no one but ourselves to blame for the woman who was lost in the bargain. It isn?t easy, I know. But nothing worthwhile ever is. Be your own plus one sometime. You may just find her terrific company along a solitary road.

As Irene made landfall in North Carolina and roared north along a densely populated corridor loaded with high-rises, suburban sprawl and pricey beach homes, fears of storm surges and heavy winds lead to evacuations of low-lying coastal areas and the shuttering of one of the world's largest subway systems.

The storm made a direct hit on New York City, but the lashing rains saved their most dramatic damage for 100 miles or more inland. Irene knocked out power to thousands, flooded miles of roads and became the costliest Category 1 U.S. hurricane on record since at least 1980, with estimated total damage of $15.8 billion.

Construction in the Flathead Valley - Cary Jo, Blue Sky Realty, LLC ...

?I am noticing a ramp up in commercial construction in the valley lately. Kalispell Regional Hospital is finishing up a new surgical wing for one example. ?Here is a photo of my "rescue from slaughter horse" with Sasha, the director of M.A.E.R.A. She was doing a photo shoot for her web site and Oscar was the only horse willing to be ridden at a gallop, before breakfast, while the rider put down the reins and shot an arrow off his back. Oscar has been settling into his new home, getting worked on by the chiropractor, equine dentist and checked out by the brand inspector. He is filling out nicely and looking healthier everyday. His teeth were a mess and causing him a lot of pain. The dentist said that it was a testament to his kindness that he still did what was asked while in so much discomfort.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 24, 2012 ? Ford's new Explorer Sport will stand in a class of one when it goes on sale next month with an EPA-certified 22 mpg highway rating, the only seven-passenger, high-performance SUV on the market to do so.

New for the 2013 model year, Ford Explorer Sport arrives, packing a 365 horsepower EcoBoost? engine, high-fashion interior design and class-leading fuel economy.

"Explorer Sport hits a sweet-spot combination of power, usable torque, 4WD capability, with class-leading fuel efficiency," said Bill Gubing, chief engineer for Explorer, Taurus and Police Interceptor vehicles. "The Explorer Sport EcoBoost engine matches Taurus SHO for output and the Terrain Management System has been specifically calibrated to optimize increased power ? regardless of the road or conditions."

Explorer Sport mixes high-performance SUV power with fuel economy of up to 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. This is 3 mpg better in the city and 2 mpg better on the highway than the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango R/T with 5.7-liter Hemi engines.

Explorer Sport scores 3 mpg higher in the city and 4 mpg higher on the highway than the supercharged Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

No compromises

"Explorer Sport is an uncompromised high-performance SUV," said Gubing. "From making changes to the chassis and suspension, uniquely calibrating the Terrain Management System for added power, we're delivering an SUV that delivers great dynamics and performance ? while towing up to 5,000 pounds."

The Explorer Sport features a paddle-shifted six-speed SelectShift Automatic? transmission with a unique 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio to provide the balance of responsive acceleration and economical low-rpm cruising for better highway fuel efficiency.

Ford engineers also added chassis tunnel reinforcements and a solid-mounted electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) rack with improved pedal feel and response for drivers, both on-road and off.
This model comes standard with larger brakes for improved pedal feel, stronger resistance to fade and better performance while towing.

Explorer Sport also has received special Terrain Management System settings for optimizing increased power and torque in on-road touring and under sandy, snowy, rutted mud and hill descent conditions. These changes enable a luxurious ride for driving enthusiasts, without the harshness or thirst for fuel of performance-intended competitors.

Development engineers validated snow settings in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and returned to Borrego Springs, Calif. to fine-tune sand settings.

Sport-specific calibration optimizes increased EcoBoost power and consistent torque to specific conditions such as deep sand or snow, at the setting of a console-mounted knob.

Design elements

The 2013 Sport builds on Explorer's muscular, sculpted form with subtle cues to differentiate it from other models in the lineup.

Available in four exterior colors ? Ruby Red Metallic Clearcoat, White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat, Tuxedo Black Metallic and Ingot Silver Metallic ? Explorer Sport has unique 20-inch painted and machined wheels, features blacked-out headlamp and taillamp treatments, black roof rack rails, sideview mirror skull caps and a liftgate appliqu?.

The Explorer Sport's special grille is a low-gloss Sterling Gray mesh, with contrasting ebony high-gloss bars.

The black front lower fascia features a functional opening for additional cooling. Explorer logotype in billet-like black adds a bold identity statement.

Inside, the high-end feel continues. Charcoal Black leather-trimmed seating is available with and without contrasting Sienna inserts.
