Mayor: Cops resisted Zimmerman 911 tape release

George Zimmerman's brother spoke out for the first time Thursday night, defending his brother's actions in the killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin and saying that medical records will back his account of the shooting. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

SANFORD, Florida -- The mayor of the city where Trayvon Martin was killed says he overruled police and prosecutors who opposed the release of tapes of 911 calls, telling them: ?We're not here to hide anything.?

Jeff Triplett, who is a senior vice president at United Legacy Bank and part-time mayor of Sanford, said he took the decision after Martin?s family asked for the release of recordings of a call that shooter George Zimmerman made to police and 911 calls from neighbors who heard the confrontation.

Police, prosecutors and the city attorney opposed releasing the calls because of the ongoing investigation, Triplett told Reuters.

?Everyone was saying to me, no, no, no, don't turn them over," he said. "I just continually asked, 'Why wouldn't we do this?'"

"I made that call to try to settle everything down a little bit, to let the family hear what transpired. We were being accused of a lot of things, or the police department was, so we can take the step to say, 'We're not here to hide anything,'" Triplett added.

World is 'watching'
Triplett was governs a population of about 54,000, 30 percent of whom are black and have long complained bitterly about police mistreatment.

"I ran for office to make a better Sanford. And this comes on your plate, and it's just amazing," 43-year-old Triplett told Reuters in an interview.

"The decisions I'm trying to make, I could be not only held accountable for them from the city side but from the nation and the world that's watching right now," he added.

Spike Lee apologizes to Florida couple, agrees to pay for retweeting their address

Martin's death?has drawn international attention, spurred protests in American cities and prompted a federal review.

Triplett has had a mixed reaction: he has been booed off a stage, defended by black community leaders, and lectured on racial justice by civil rights activists.

He described how, on March 16, he invited Martin's family and lawyers to his office at City Hall to listen to the 911 calls prior to the public release. Natalie Jackson, an Orlando civil rights lawyer, was also present.

Martin's mother weeps
Triplett played the calls on his office computer. Someone was heard crying for help. Martin's mother wept and ran from the room, convinced it was her son, Jackson said. Everyone was moved to tears.

"It was very emotional," Triplett recalled. "Obviously when you hear something like that, there couldn't be anything worse for a family member or a parent ... and to hear your own son, what transpired at the last second."

Police video shows George Zimmerman shortly after Trayvon Martin shooting

Not everyone approves of Triplett's actions. Sanford City Commissioner Patty Mahany said she thought he meant well, but that he had drawn more attention to the case and the calls could influence jurors in any trial.

"I think it stirred up a lot of anger in very well-meaning people who still don't have the whole story," Mahany said.

Controversy surrounding the case deepened Thursday when surveillance video footage of George Zimmerman being led from a police car shortly after he fatally shot Martin appeared not to show any obvious signs of injuries or bloodstains.

The footage, obtained by ABC News, shows a handcuffed Zimmerman getting out of the police car unaided and walking into the police station.

In the video, there are no readily visible signs of injuries to Zimmerman's head or blood on his clothes. However,?he is wearing a red jacket, which could obscure blood stains. Also, at one point, an officer pauses to look at the back of Zimmerman's head, which he claims was injured by Martin.

Meanwhile, a college newspaper has apologized for publishing a cartoon about the Martin case after it received complaints, according to a report in the LA Times.

The editorial board of the University of Texas at Austin's Daily Texan said its decision to publish the cartoon ?showed a failure in judgment on the part of the editorial board?, adding that the cartoonist responsible, Stephanie Eisner, had left the paper.

What exactly is Commitment in Relationships? | blog for 139.li

The query of whenever a romantic relationship is dedicated is really a source of a lot confusion and debate. We reside in a time when the marriage rate is really going down, the co-habitation rate is going up, and also the majority of first-born kids are actually born to unmarried mother and father.

In this write-up I hope to shed some mild on this question to facilitate your function with partners and people challenged by distinct perceptions in the standing of their relationships.

Dedication VS. Promise

I recently had a discussion using a girl who told me she had just broken off a ?committed? connection. A couple of questions later on I learned that she had been dating this person for any 12 months, they were not residing with each other, plus the explanation she broke it off is the fact that he ?cheated.?

We talked about pre-committed vs. dedicated relationships, and she agreed that it had been a pre-committed romantic relationship, but insisted which they had made a ?commitment? to one another.

Okay, items are receiving clearer. On the one hand would be the standing with the relationship- pre-committed vs. dedicated, and alternatively are commitments created within the connection. Macro vs. micro. Two diverse things, proper?

Within our discussion, it occurred to me to produce a distinction amongst a ?Commitment? vs. a ?Promise.? They produced a promise to each other within the context of the partnership which was not committed. That distinction appeared to assist her make extra sensation of items.

When I asked the RCI coaches for comments around the ?commitment vs. promise? distinction, most felt that it was just semantics and there is certainly not much of a distinction. The general consensus was that any time you make a guarantee you are generating a dedication.

Nicely, I agree that it can be a question of semantics, and right here is my definition of terms:

Promise: Verbally stated future intention to carry out a distinct act.

- I promise to pick up your dry cleaning rather than overlook this time ? I promise to be unique inside our connection

Dedication: Both a Truth shown by habits, and an Frame of mind consisting of feelings and beliefs.

- Im dedicated to retaining my promises ? Im dedicated to our relationship

In brief, a guarantee is one thing you say, and a dedication is some thing you do. A promise is situation-specific. A dedication is contextual.

A guarantee is a compact dedication. If a potential partner does not preserve guarantees, Id question their capability to help keep commitments, as they are undoubtedly related.

CONFUSION ABOUT Dedication

Irrespective of whether or not you agree with my semantics, the distinction I created amongst a dedication and a promise was useful for the above conversation.

The larger image even though, is the fact that I see plenty of confusion concerning the standing of todays associations. Some years in the past when I coined the term ?pre-commitment? to describe partners that had been unique but not yet committed, it was a helpful distinction, however the query remains- ?What is dedication??

If you are married, it is distinct you are in a committed relationship. Your commitment is a lawful contract along with a publicly witnessed Fact. Nonetheless, its common for couples in difficulty for one or both partners to get an uncommitted Frame of mind.

I have talked with a lot of unmarried persons, as the girl above, whove explained on their own in ?committed relationships.? They clearly have the mindset, but usually have nothing at all but verbal promises (and from time to time not even that!) to display the romantic relationship is dedicated.

IN MY Opinion, That you are -NOT- Inside a Dedicated Relationship IF:

1. Your companion just isnt conscious your relationship is dedicated

2. You happen to be asking yourself if this partnership is committed

3. You and your partner have differences of viewpoint about the status of your relationship

4. Your household and friends have different perceptions about the status of ones connection

5. You and your companion have not acted to explicitly formalize your dedication in a few way

6. Youre relying on verbal guarantees with out a substantial monitor report of them being stored

A commitment is explicit and unambiguous. A commitment is actually a formal occasion of some sort in between two people. A commitment is something you DO over time. A true commitment is typically lawfully enforceable and you will discover penalties for breaking it.

And, for a partnership to become absolutely dedicated, there are actually no exits- mentally, emotionally, or physically. Once the going will get tough, you ensure it is function.

CONTINUUM OF Dedication

Dedication just isnt a mild switch that goes from ?off? to ?on.? When building a romantic relationship with a person, the amount of dedication steadily improves.

Then youve all the shades of grey. living collectively, dating exclusively for additional than a calendar year, even engaged to become married, that may possibly look and feel like commitment, but can it be genuinely?

Truth VS. Attitude

Dedication inside a romantic relationship is difficult in that it will take two people today, and it demands an alignment of Fact (activities, actions) and Attitude (feelings, beliefs) for both of them.

It can be typical to become committed the truth is (e.g. ?married?) although not in frame of mind (e.g. ?Im not sure this can be the right romantic relationship for me?).

It is also common to be pre-committed actually (e.g. dating solely) and dedicated in attitude (e.g. ?This is The One! ?).

In my function with partners Ive found that probably the most vital variable figuring out their future good results is their level of dedication for the romantic relationship.

In my knowledge, when partners are dedicated in truth, although not in attitude, their prognosis is lousy.

Then, you will discover the pre-committed couples that commonly drop into two categories-

UNCONSCIOUS- ordinarily following the ?mini-marriage? design of trying the connection out, acting dedicated with no actually producing the dedication. A disconnect of fact and attitude.

CONSCIOUS- conscious that they may be not but dedicated, usually have commitment like a goal, asking themselves ?Is this the correct romantic relationship for me? Should I produce a dedication?? An alignment of truth and attitude.

Conclusion

So, when can be a relationship committed?

? When theres an alignment of reality and mindset.

What generates the ?fact? of dedication?

I propose these three criterion:

Requirements #1: Promises created to each other regarding the permanent nature in the romantic relationship which can be kept

Criteria #2: Explicit, formal, public declaration

Criteria #3: Unambiguous to partners and others

In modern day planet, if all 3 in the above are fulfilled, I would say it is a committed relationship, regardless of whether legally married or not.

I sincerely hope this post assists address the common questions about commitment that arise in connection coaching. Youll find no pat answers or prescriptions, but it is my hope that these tips and ideas will help you have effective discussions with your clientele that are caught inside the grey locations to support them to make effective connection options.

Student loan | CHEERFUL DEER FINANCE

Under the accepted standards of borrowing student loans, it is stressed that you can borrow up to the cost of attendance, as determined by your school, less other financial assistance you might be receiving. Other financial assistance refers to grants, work-study, and scholarships. And, the cost of attendance typically involves tuition, books, fees, room and board, and other miscellaneous living expenses.

Also, the cost of attendance as determined by your school has figures that are meant to apply to a wide group of students. Oftentimes, you may not need to borrow as much as your school allows. Note that it is best to borrow the minimum amount possible so that you can lessen your overall financial obligation later.

If you prefer to consider borrowing student loans to finance your education, just expect that some of the lenders these days have borrowing limits placed on student loans. For instance, the federal government places annual and aggregate borrowing restrictions on federal student loans, and the aggregate limit is usually the total amount that every student can borrow in the span of his or her education. Given this fact, it is then necessary to examine and evaluate the terms of every loan you plan to take on for the annual and aggregate loan restrictions.

Aside from that, carefully and honestly assess your current financial status, including any financial commitments you have made before entering the school of your own choice. Understanding the repayment obligations of every commitment you?ve made is the key here. Note that over time you will be responsible for these prior obligations in addition to any education debt you take on, and your education loans are not given to cover these prior obligations you have.

Finally, consider the realistic determination of your future income. You can perform some research on the current job market and start salaries in the area you plan to pursue. Just note that you will be paying for your education with your future income. So, when choosing a student loan program, be sure to do some investigations on the loans that offer you alternative repayment plans which can assist you in managing your payments, especially early on in your own career.

(AP) ? A pledge by the manufacturer of Apple's iPhones and iPads to limit work hours at its factories in China could force other global corporations to hike pay for Chinese workers who produce the world's consumer electronics, toys and other goods.

Foxconn Technology's promise comes as Beijing is pushing foreign companies to share more of their revenues with Chinese employees. It follows a report by a labor auditor hired by Apple Inc. that found Foxconn was regularly violating legal limits on overtime, with factory employees working more than 60 hours per week.

"I think whatever Foxconn did will have an impact, certainly, on all Chinese workers in all trades," said Willy Lin, managing director of Hong Kong-based Milo's Knitwear, which makes clothing in three factories in China for European clients.

Foxconn, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., promised to limit hours while keeping total pay the same, effectively paying more per hour. Foxconn is one of China's biggest employers, with 1.2 million workers who also assemble products for Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Japan's Toshiba Group, which employs 32,000 workers in China to make goods such as refrigerators and TVs, said it too is taking measures to reduce overtime work and create safe working conditions at its factories.

China has long been a low-cost manufacturing center for goods sold under foreign brand names. But wages already were rising quickly as companies compete for workers and communist leaders try to push the country up the technology ladder to make more profitable products.

After a lull following the 2008 global crisis when Beijing froze the minimum wage to help exporters compete, Chinese workers have received big pay hikes over the past two years, though salaries still are low by Western standards.

Foxconn responded to a spate of suicides by employees at one of its mainland factory campuses in 2010 by more than doubling its basic monthly salary to 1,800 yuan ($290). The same year, Toyota Motor Corp. and other Japanese automakers granted pay hikes following a wave of strikes that had tacit government support.

Communist leaders have promised to double the country's minimum wage from 2010 levels by 2015.

The minimum wage in Shanghai, one of the world's most expensive cities, is about 1,200 yuan ($200) a month after an increase of more than 10 percent last year. The northern city of Tianjin raised its minimum wage to 1,070 yuan ($175).

Beijing has tightened enforcement of wage and hour rules "because there has been a general lack of compliance ? greater than in other countries," said K. Lesli Ligorner, head of the China employment group for law firm Simmons & Simmons.

"China is trying to make sure that at least at the lowest level of unskilled workers there are greater protections in place for them," she said.

Export-driven manufacturers along China's booming east coast also have to pay more to get and keep workers as rising living standards in the countryside mean fewer people migrate to cities for factory jobs.

U.S. and European clients might push Chinese suppliers to pay more so they look better in front of consumers, Ligorner said.

Higher wages at Foxconn "will have a ripple effect," she said.

Pay and working and environmental conditions are a sensitive issue for U.S. and European companies, some of which have been criticized by activist groups. Companies such as Nike Inc. and The Walt Disney Co. set specific standards in contracts with producers of toys, athletic shoes and other goods sold under their brands and send auditors to enforce them.

"We mind our corporate social responsibility and demand that our contract manufacturers strictly follow local as well as international rules on labor and environmental protection," said Henry Wang, public relations director for Taiwan's Acer Inc., the world's fourth-largest personal manufacturer.

Acer's laptop computers are produced by contractors in Kunshan, west of Shanghai, and in Chongqing in the southwest.

Wang said he didn't know whether the report on Foxconn by the Fair Labor Association, an American industry group, would lead to changes at Acer. He said suppliers already are required to "strictly follow" rules on wages and working conditions.

Higher wages will be easier for manufacturers to absorb if labor is a small portion of their total costs.

Research firm IHS iSuppli estimates that Apple pays $8 for the assembly of a 16-gigabyte iPhone 4S and $188 for its components. iSuppli's figures suggest that if Apple were to absorb a Foxconn wage increase to keep pay level and cut the work week from 60 hours to 49, it would pay less than $2 extra to have an iPhone made.

Other companies earn smaller profits and might find higher wages harder to pass on.

Higher costs in China already have prompted some companies in labor-intensive industries such as shoes and textiles to migrate to Vietnam and other lower-wage economies.

Lin, the garment manufacturer, said his company employs about 1,500 people in Guangdong province near Hong Kong. He said entry level pay has more than doubled over the past five years from 600 to 700 yuan ($95-$110) a month to about 1,500 yuan ($240).

"Anything lower than that, you wouldn't find the workers willing to do it," he said.

Artist Charles R. Knight drew on his vast experience depicting living animals to bring prehistoric creatures to life?a practice that made him keenly aware of the finality of extinction

You may not know his name, but chances are that you have seen his work. Brooklyn-born artist Charles R. Knight (1874?1953) produced paintings and sculptures of dinosaurs, mam?moths and prehistoric humans that adorn the great natural history museums in the U.S. His dinos have appeared as toys, stamps and comics, as well as in books and scientific journals on paleontology. One of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?s illustrators swiped them for his 1912 novel The Lost World. Some even became movie stars, directly inspiring sequences in the 1933 King Kong and, more indirectly, Walt Disney?s 1940 Fantasia and Steven Spielberg?s 1993 Jurassic Park. Hollywood?s master monster animator Ray Harryhausen, creator of the dinosaurs in the 1966 One Million Years B.C. and other cult classics, based his stop-motion puppets on paint?ings and sculptures by Knight.

Judge orders Sugarland singer to testify in April

(AP) ? Singer Jennifer Nettles of the country duo Sugarland has been ordered to give a deposition next month in lawsuits filed over August's deadly Indiana State Fair stage collapse.

Attorneys for stage builder Mid-America Sound Corp. had wanted Nettles and fellow band member Kristian Bush to begin providing depositions starting Monday, but Marion Superior Court Judge Theodore Sosin on Friday approved a request by the band's attorneys to reject that timetable.

Sugarland's attorneys had proposed holding depositions in May, but the judge ordered them to provide dates and times between April 1 and April 15 in which only Nettles can testify.

Mid-America built the roof and rigging used to hold lights and sound equipment that collapsed Aug. 13 before the scheduled Sugarland concert. Seven people died and dozens were injured.

HBT: Dunn has big day with two homers

Adam Dunn never homered off a left-handed pitcher last year. Today, he hit two in three at-bats off Royals southpaw Bruce Chen.

Dunn delivered a two-run homer in the first and a grand slam in the fifth inning, giving him four homers in 24 at-bats this spring. He?s struck out just once and walked nine times.

After signing a big four-year, $56 million deal with the White Sox, Dunn turned in one of the worst seasons in recent history in 2011, hitting .159/.292/.277 with 11 homers and 42 RBI in 415 at-bats. He was 6-for-94, good for a .064 average, against southpaws.

Obviously, a strong March isn?t making up for that, but it is looking like the White Sox will get to see the real Dunn this year. Satellites identify thousands of small hills as ancient human settlements

Now, two scientists have figured out a more efficient way of locating these sites, via their footprints, from space.

Ancient humans have changed the landscape around their settlements in such ways that even today archaeologists can distinguish between "lived in" spots and those never occupied by humans.

Now, two scientists have figured out a more efficient way of locating these sites, via their footprints, from space.

The scientists relied on two distinct features of ancient settlements in the Near East: soils altered by human activity and?little hills that formed over time as residents successively built on top of older structures. By examining satellite images for these two features, they have found evidence of about 9,500 possible human settlements across an area of 8,880 square miles (23,000 square kilometers) in northern Mesopotamia, located in the northeast of modern Syria.?

Data recorded by satellites as they orbit the Earth has been?used in archaeological surveys before.

However, this new survey, produced by looking at soil and mounds, is "to the best of our knowledge, the largest systematic satellite-imagery-based survey in archaeology," they write in a study published March 19 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Clustered settlements built on artificial mounds appeared along this northern edge of the Fertile Crescent around 7000 B.C. Buildings were made of mud brick, with new buildings constructed on top of the remains of older ones. As a result, the settlements grew upward from the alluvial plains for hundreds or thousands of years, so long as they were occupied, according to the researchers. Large mounds?are called Tells.

So far, mounds left by ancient settlements in the Near East have received little attention, according to Bjoern Menze, a research affiliate in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory?and Jason Ur, an associate professor of anthropology at Harvard University. But the mounds are key to the technique they devised. [Aerial Photos Reveal Mysterious Stone Structures]

Soil provides the other defining feature of ancient settlements. Soils at these sites are lighter, finer and composed of more organic material than the surrounding soils, according to Menze and Ur. They first used a computer algorithm to look for these changes. As a result, they found more than 14,000 potential sites.

When they looked at the volume of the settlement site ? reflected by the size of the mound ? about 9,500 sites had a significant elevation above the ground. The researchers interpreted the size of a mound as evidence of how attractive it was as a settlement site, with larger mounds being able to attract and sustain residents for a longer time.??

Using this approach to look at large areas all at once, it may be possible to explore how environmental factors ??like water availability?? influenced ancient human settlements in the Near East, they write.??

(AP) ? Glittering sapphire necklaces, designer suits against perfumed skin, the taste of freshly popped Champagne and the roar of a speeding Porsche: the five senses in Nigeria, brought to you by luxury brands now trying to tap directly into the country's market.

The wealthy elite in Nigeria ? upstart business owners, oil industry executives and corrupt politicians ? have a healthy appetite for top-shelf brands, but have previously had to shop for them in Dubai, London and Paris. Now though, sellers of luxury goods are opening stores in Nigeria where seemingly gratuitous displays of wealth are the norm.

"I feel that with some real infrastructure development and opportunity to create luxury environments for luxury brands to come in, this market has enormous potential to become a key luxury capital of Africa," said Ozwald Boateng, a top British fashion designer born to Ghanaian parents who recently showed a collection at Arise Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos.

"I have some very good clients here but I want to have more," said Boateng, who has a flagship store on London's prestigious Savile Row, where bespoke suits start at around $6,500.

Since independence in 1960, wealth flowed into Nigeria as crude oil pumped out. The OPEC nation's easily refined crude remains a top energy source for the U.S. However, politicians and military rulers squandered billions of dollars through the corruption choking the nation's potential.

Then democracy took hold in 1999, and other industries have since developed in the country of 160 million, including banking and telecommunications. Billionaire Aliko Dangote, whose net worth is $11.2 billion according to Forbes magazine, built his empire on commodities like flour, sugar and cement. Another billionaire, Mike Adenuga, runs an oil company and Globacom Ltd., one of Nigeria's largest mobile phone service providers.

Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos, along with four other of Africa's largest cities, will each have consumer spending of $25 billion or more by 2020, according to a McKinsey & Co. report. That's comparable to spending in India's business hub of Mumbai.

That purchasing power is starting to draw new brands into Nigeria. Those include LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, one of the world's largest luxury brand groups; Amrapali Jewels Pvt. Ltd., which makes jewels for Hollywood and Bollywood stars; and Porsche AG. Those businesses often work with partners already established in Nigeria's difficult businesses environment, where there are no dedicated luxury shopping areas. Luxury companies can run small operations, get little competition and have markups that make the profits high.

LVMH, the French luxury conglomerate, has doubled its marketing efforts in Nigeria to sell its top-shelf wines and liquors. The company also came out with a commemorative Hennessy cognac bottle in honor of Nigeria's 50th independence in 2010 ? a sign of the country's value to the company.

"Nigeria is the largest market in Africa and the Middle East for Moet Hennessy," said the company's Nigeria marketing manager, Tokini Peterside. "For Hennessy cognac, Nigeria ranks among the Top 10 consuming countries in the world."

It's not just cognac that Nigerian top buyers want. Indian jewelers Amrapali sold a $37,000 necklace in Nigeria that set a diamond in 22-karat gold with blue, yellow and red sapphires and hope to sell others at the store they stock in Nigeria.

"We've noticed that people are not afraid to wear bold things," said Sameer Lilani, a London-based representative for Amrapali. "It suits people here and it suits the climate. The delicate things didn't get such a good reaction."

Sports car maker Porsche also recently opened a showroom on Lagos' Victoria Island, home to many company headquarters and homes for the nation's wealthiest citizens. The open-air showroom, visible from traffic on one of the island's busiest roads, prominently displays the new Porsche 911 Carrera S, starting from about $150,000.

"In any project that we do, we look far beyond today," said George Wills, Porsche's managing director for the Middle East and Africa. "Whilst today the numbers may not be significant, what will happen with Porsche in the future as we produce new models, new derivatives, is that these will create bigger opportunities."

Spending that much money on a Porsche that goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in four seconds may not make sense in the reality of Nigeria, where poorly maintained roads have axle-eating potholes. Such spending also draws criticism from social commentators, especially as a recent government report showed more than 100 million people in Nigeria live in poverty, subsisting on less than $2 a day.

Yet the spending continues in a nation where the rich take out full-page newspaper advertisements to celebrate birthdays and bells ring and waiters light up sparklers when a table buys a bottle of Champagne.

Many of those waiting the tables and hustling chewing gum in traffic hold out the belief, based on churches preaching financial prosperity, that they too will some day look out at the world from behind tinted glass.

"There is a sense of opportunity here. People believe 'my turn will come,'" said Folarin Gbadebo-Smith, the director of the Centre for Public Policy Alternatives in Lagos. "Whereas in many other places there's that sense that where you find yourself in society could be permanent, here everybody is rich in waiting."

Denver is now Peyton Manning's town

(AP) ? Denver is now Peyton Manning's town and the Broncos are his team.

It's out with the turn-back-the-clock option offense and in with the no-huddle ? at altitude, no less.

Goodbye Tim Tebow and all those No. 15 jerseys that are everywhere. Hello four-time MVP and surefire future Hall of Famer.

It will take some time for everyone, Manning included, to get used to seeing him in an orange uniform, but when John Elway flashed that mile-wide grin and turned the microphone over to his new quarterback Tuesday, he was symbolically handing over the keys to the franchise to the biggest free agent acquisition in NFL history.

Talk about a powerful pair.

Introducing Manning as the newest Denver Bronco on Tuesday, the two Super Bowl winners each talked about hoisting another Lombardi Trophy, this time together. And soon.

"I realize I don't have 14 years left, by any means," Manning said. "This isn't something where I'm just building a foundation to do something in two years or three years. This is a 'now' situation. We're going to do whatever we can to win right now. That's all I'm thinking about right now."

Just so long as Manning's surgically repaired neck goes along with the plan.

His surgeon has cleared him, and Manning passed all medical tests for his new team but acknowledged he has a long way to go in his rehab from a series of neck operations that sidelined him all of 2011 and led to his release by the Colts two weeks ago.

His new five-year, $96 million contract has $58 million in guarantees and also some protections for the Broncos in case his neck issues pop up again. His deal includes no signing bonus and a fully guaranteed $18 million salary next season. The salaries jump to $20 million in 2013-14 but with protections against neck problems, and he'll make $19 million in each of the final two years, both of which non-guaranteed.

Neither he nor Elway has a doubt that he'll recover completely by the start of the season, and the Hall of Famer-turned-executive knew the NFL's only four-time MVP was just what his club needed.

The franchise has won just two playoff games since Elway's career came to an end with a second straight Super Bowl triumph in 1999.

"He's a guy that raises all boats. He's already made (his teammates) better, and they haven't met him yet just because of the type of person he is, his reputation and what he's done in this league. So, he's just going to have a tremendous effect on the Denver Broncos."

That's because Manning is like Michael Jordan was in basketball ? a perfectionist who demands a similar commitment from his teammates. They all know they'd better be ready from Day 1 when they can gather for offseason workouts starting April 16.

No more rounding off routes, imprecise patterns, concentration slips.

Although Manning got a playbook Tuesday, Denver's offense is going to be drastically different in 2012 with Manning deciphering defenses and switching calls at the line of scrimmage like he did so well in Indy.

The free agent floodgates should open wide for the Broncos now that Manning is their quarterback, putting them in the mix for quality veterans, possibly including Manning's former teammates Jeff Saturday and Dallas Clark.

"Anytime you've got a guy like Peyton Manning on your team, you've got a chance to win," Elway said. "And players know that ... and so a lot of guys that are out there that are free (agents) want to go to a place where they have a chance to win a championship. So, it's a huge benefit for us."

The Broncos still have roughly $20 million in cap space and could really use a running back who can catch 40-50 balls out of the backfield like Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes did for the Colts all those years. They could also use a center such as Saturday, who played with Manning in Indianapolis, where he handled the line calls in adjusting protections and block schemes while Manning conveyed the changes to the running backs and receivers.

After holding up his new, bright orange jersey in a photo op with Elway and owner Pat Bowlen, Manning answered many of the questions that have been bouncing around since March 7, when the Colts released him to avoid paying a $28 million bonus and set in motion one of the most frenetic free-agent pursuits in history.

The first issue on everyone's mind: So, Peyton, how do you feel?

"I'm not where I want to be. I want to be where I was before I was injured," Manning said, referring to the neck problem that kept him off the field in 2011 after he'd started every game for the Colts for the previous 13 seasons. "I have a lot of work to do in getting to where I want to be from a health standpoint and learning this offense. This is going to take a ton of work."

As far as being the man who could bring about the end of Tebow's stay in Denver, Manning said: "I know what kind of player Tim Tebow is, what kind of person he is ... and what an awesome year he had this year. If Tim Tebow is here next year, I'm going to be the best teammate I can be to him, he and I are going to help this team win games. If other opportunities present themselves to him, I'm going to wish him the best."

As excited as Elway was to welcome Manning on board, he was just as sad for Tebow, who's expected to be on the trading block.

"Tim Tebow's a great kid. If I want someone to marry my daughter, it's him," Elway said.

But to run an NFL offense, to get a title, he wanted Manning.

"My goal is to make Peyton Manning the best quarterback that's ever played the game," Elway said, "and he's got that ability with the football that he's got left."

Manning, who turns 36 on Saturday, said he made a quick connection with Elway, who won his two Super Bowls in Denver after his 37th birthday. Since No. 7's retirement, Denver has had 11 quarterbacks, each trying in vain to replace the irreplaceable. If anyone can get out of that shadow, Manning could be the man.

He has one title in two trips to the Super Bowl, 11 Pro Bowls and was the fastest player to reach 50,000 yards and 4,000 completions. His first TD toss for Denver will be his 400th.

Manning's familiar No. 18 was actually retired ? a tribute to Denver's first quarterback, Frank Tripucka. But Tripucka was more than happy to let Manning bring it out of mothballs.

Denver's last playoff victory came over Pittsburgh two months ago, when Tebow delivered a stadium-rocking, 80-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime.

But things change, and in the NFL, they can change fast. Tebowmania is now a passing fad in Denver.

A couple of photos of Tebow that once adorned the halls at the Broncos' headquarters were gone Tuesday by the time Manning was introduced.

Elway and coach John Fox were strategizing in Elway's office Monday morning, wondering if they should reach out to the prized QB one more time.

Just then the phone rang. It was Manning.

Elway told him he sounded tired and Manning replied that he'd had a tough morning calling teams to say thanks, but no thanks.

Elway's heart sank, then skipped a beat when Manning said he wanted to join him in Denver. Elway gave the thumbs-up sign to Fox.

"He was doing a little jig over there," Elway said.

"I almost pulled both hamstrings," Fox said.

Then, Elway hung up and they high-fived each other and the rest of the coaching and scouting staff and began preparing for life with the next elite quarterback in this QB-crazed town.
