At six months, development of children with autism like those without

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? The development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is much like that of children without ASD at 6 months of age, but differs afterwards. That's the main finding of the largest prospective, longitudinal study to date comparing children with early and later diagnosis of ASD with children without ASD. The study appears in the journal Child Development and has implications for clinical work, public health, and policy.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Aging Brain Center at the Institute for Aging Research and Hebrew SeniorLife at Harvard Medical School.

The study sought to learn more about the patterns of development during the first three years of life in children with and without ASD to better understand how ASD can be detected as early as possible. It is the first prospective study to examine early-onset ASD (by 14 months) and later-onset ASD (after 14 months) over the first three years, pinpointing where development looks the same and where it diverges.

ASD comprises a group of disorders of brain development that affects about 1 in 88 American children.

Researchers looked at 235 primarily White children with and without an older sibling with autism, testing them at regular intervals from ages 6 to 36 months. Using standardized and play-based assessments, they tested children's fine motor skills, understanding of spoken language, and spoken language production skills. They also measured how often the children shared their emotions and initiated communication with others.

The study looked at early development across three groups: children without ASD, children with ASD who were identified by 14 months, and children with ASD identified after 14 months. At 6 months, development within the early- and later-identified ASD groups was comparable to each other and to the non-ASD group. At 14 and 18 months, the early-identified ASD group performed below the later-identified ASD group in many aspects of development. By 24 to 36 months, the two groups showed similar levels of development.

"Results show that ASD has a preclinical phase when detecting it may be difficult," explains Rebecca Landa, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the study's lead author. "In some children with ASD, early signs of developmental disruption may not be ASD-specific.

"Routinely administering general developmental screeners, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, should begin in infancy, complemented by ASD-specific screeners by 14 months," suggests Landa. "Screening should be repeated through early childhood. If concerning signs of delay associated with ASD are observed in a child who scores normally on standardized tests, further assessment is warranted."

Preliminary data for model year 2012, which ended with September, show that new records have been set for fleetwide average fuel economy and the sales of hybrids and plug-in electric vehicles. Dealer showrooms feature an unprecedented choice of fuel-efficient cars and trucks and consumers are buying them. Federal clean car and fuel economy standards are also working as intended to spur automaker investment in fuel-efficiency, which is just what consumers need to protect them from the gas prices pain at the pump.

Fleetwide Fuel Economy Hits a Record High and Saves Consumers Money

According to University of Michigan researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle, model year 2012 reached 23.6 mpg (window label value), which is 1.1 mpg higher than the previous record of 22.5 mpg for model year 2011.

In fact, fuel economy has been on a steady rise over the last five years, largely in response to government action. In 2007, Congress passed and President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act that required increases in fuel economy through 2030. Hulk Hogan settles sex tape lawsuit with DJ

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) ? Former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan has settled a lawsuit with a disc jockey over a sex tape involving Hogan and the DJ's wife.

A statement by Hogan's publicist Monday says the terms of the settlement are confidential.

Hogan said in a lawsuit earlier this month that he had consensual sex with his best friend's wife, Heather Clem, six years ago in the Clems' home, but he didn't know he was being videotaped.

The disc jockey, Bubba the Love Sponge Clem, apologized to Hogan on Monday. Clem also said that he's convinced Hogan was unaware he was being filmed.

A lawsuit is still pending against the gossip website Gawker, which put excerpts of the video on its site.

Manikrao Thakre to send legal notice to Gadkari | Firstpost

Mumbai: Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Manikrao Thakre today said he will send a legal notice to BJP chief Nitin Gadkari for making ?baseless allegations? against him of non-payment of Rs 23 lakh to sugarcane growers.

At a press conference, Thakre said due to the spate of allegations against Gadkari, the BJP leader is disturbed and has been levelling counter charges to divert attention and threatening the media for exposing him.

?I do not owe any money to sugarcane growers. This could be be a transaction between Gadkari?s Purti group and the Yavatmal sugar co-operative factory. Transportation charges are involved because sugarcane from one factory is taken to another factory for crushing. But, I am not the chairman of the Yavatmal sugar factory,? he said.

Lashing out at Gadkari, Thakre said, ?The BJP national president says he works for the benefit of Vidarbha farmers. He is a member of the legislative council. How many times has he attended its proceedings and highlighted farmers? issues in the last five years?.

Thakre alleged that Gadkari himself had duped farmers who had taken loans worth Rs 25 lakh from the Chandrapur District Co-operative Bank.

?In 2004-05, Purti Sugar Co-operative had entered into a deal with Satyam Engineering Consultants to set up a lift irrigation project in Usegaon village of Chandrapur district. Farmers who trusted the deal because of Gadkari?s involvement kept their land as collateral to get bank guarantee for the loan. However, Satyam did not do any work and backed out of the project, leaving farmers in the lurch,? he said.

Thakre said he has written to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan not to allow private parties to purchase sugar co-operatives. ?Sugar co-operatives should be run by the government with farmers? help. Otherwise the co-operative sector will be adversely affected,? he said.

First of all, I owe you all an apology for not delivering on time.? I tried to edit this entry on my iPhone while at work to make it in time for posting on Friday, however, that didn?t work out.? Writing a blog entry on an iPhone is ridiculously hard and being surrounded by 160 people makes it nearly impossible to focus.? I didn?t want to sacrifice the quality of the post simply to get it to you on time.? After sixteen hours on set and a week of sleeping only 4-hours a night, I felt extremely tired and dehydrated and so Saturday was a total write-off (meaning, I was lazy and didn?t do anything).? That?s a terrible excuse, but it?s the truth.? Here it is, the entry you?ve been waiting for.

Resolution

Thursday, I went over the second element of a believable romantic relationship: obstacles ? are these realistic obstacles that could prevent them from falling in love? Today I?ll go over resolution; is it possible these two can overcome this obstacle in order to live happily ever after?

I kind of dealt with this in the last post when I discussed how obstacles must be surmountable. Guess I got a bit ahead of myself. I?m going to take it one step further. It?s one thing to be able to forgive one another for whatever it was that kept you apart, but is it believable that it won?t come between them again?

Harry & Sally. Their obstacle was sex. Once they had sex, it ruined their friendship, so their only option after that was to be together. We?ve already seen that they make a great couple, the only thing missing in their relationship was physical and emotional intimacy. Once the sex was out of the way, their new obstacle was admitting their true feelings for one another. Harry confessed his love for Sally, which made it impossible for her to be mad at him because she loved him too and he told her in a way she would believe.? Because Harry said what he loved about her were all the things other men considered flaws or reasons to leave her, she knew he?d never pull away like that again.? If a man loves you for who you are as you are, he?ll love you forever.

27 Dresses. Their obstacle was that Kevin used Jane to get a story and in the process, he assumed she was a certain kind of girl. Jane is that girl to some extent; she can?t say no. But when he realizes she?s not the victim he thought she was and tries to change the article, it?s too late.? Jane?s angry with him over the article, but when he tells her she never says no to anyone, it gets under her skin ? she knows he?s right.? Jane ultimately realizes Kevin is the kind of man she really needs, not her boss who appreciates that she never says no because it allows him to walk all over her.? We can believe the obstacle that kept these two apart will never resurface in their relationship because first of all, Jane sees what Kevin told her as true and it changed her life for the better, and secondly, Kevin realized he made a mistake in writing the original article without considering the feelings of those he wrote about, so it?s unlikely he?ll ever do anything like that again.? They need each other: Kevin to tell Jane when to be selfish and Jane to keep Kevin from being too selfish.? There?s nothing separating them once they admit their feelings for one another.

What?s an example of an obstacle that can?t be resolved?

Fundamental character flaws that makes them incompatible.

I have a hard time believing a gorgeous go-getter and a lazy unemployed schlubb as in Knocked Up would last regardless of his attempts to man-up.? The obstacle they have to overcome is their total incompatibility.? She doesn?t change, he does.? But can he really be the kind of man she needs in the long-run?? Sharing a kid isn?t enough to hold two people together.? If it were, divorce rates wouldn?t be so high.? Even if Seth Rogen had been replaced by say Ryan Reynolds, he still didn?t have a job, acted like a boob, and had a collection of ridiculous friends who would always hold him back in life.
Breaking trust.? Once trust leaves a relationship, it?s doomed.

All the above examples, trust was reinstated either because both parties committed the same offense or because the offense wasn?t really that awful, it was merely the wake-up call they needed, but didn?t want to hear.? If the balance is off or the offense is too strong, it mostly likely won?t be resolved or will come back later in the relationship.? In Lose A Guy, had Ben not used Andie in the exact same way as she used him, there wouldn?t be a possibility of forgiveness. He wouldn?t be able to understand how she could do something so awful. Not only that, but because her objective was to lose him, she never would have bothered to get to know him to care if she lost him. He would have to be really persistent & charming to win her over so she feels badly about using him every step of the way and then she?d have to either let go of the game or her job.? But the way the movie is written, they both see glimpses of their true nature, which is what makes them fall for one another and wins out in the end.? Despite their stupid games or even because of them, it?s clear they found their match.

In The Proposal, the balance starts off on Margaret?s side because she?s a selfish nasty bitch who ropes her assistant into marrying her to stay in the country, threatening him with his job.? It doesn?t get much worse than that.? Andrew gets his own back by using her to lie to his family, pretending they?re really a couple.? This irritates his father to the point where he calls immigration and has Margaret deported to stop his son from ruining his life.? Even though Margaret apologizes for the harm she caused, it still seems a bit lop-sided.? For Andrew to chase after her and offer to marry her even if he did fall in love with her, seems a bit hard to believe.? Yet, because Margaret sacrificed her career to be selfless for once shows she really loves him and so it should be enough for us to believe she?s changed and would never use anyone again.

Windows 8 runs on standard chips from Intel and AMD and is the version you'd get if you're upgrading your home desktop or notebook PC. Windows RT is the version for light, small tablets and laptop-tablet hybrids.

Windows 8 will run programs written for older versions of Windows. Windows RT won't. It's limited to applications specifically written for it and available through Microsoft's store. (As a consolation, a version of Microsoft Office is included free on Windows RT devices).

Here are some tips on how to navigate the new Windows:

??When you start a Windows 8 machine, you're greeted with a screen that shows the time and a pretty picture. To get past it with a touch-screen device, swipe upwards with your finger from the bottom edge of the screen. If you have a keyboard, hit any key.

? Next, you'll see a mosaic of Live Tiles, each representing an application. Programs specifically written for Windows 8 will run in this new environment, which is unofficially nicknamed Metro. Each application fills the screen when you run it. Applications written for older Windows versions will open up in something that looks very much like the old Windows Desktop environment. You can switch back and forth between Metro and the new Desktop, though Microsoft wants people to eventually use only Metro.

? The Desktop screen lacks a Start button, so it's hard to start programs from there. Microsoft's idea is that users should learn to go to the Metro tiles to start programs or access settings, even if many programs, including some Windows utilities, will open up in Desktop. To get back to the tiled Start screen with a mouse or touchpad, move the mouse cursor to the top right corner of the screen, then swipe it down to the "Start" icon that appears. If you have a touch screen, reveal the Start icon by swiping in from the right edge of the screen.

? In the Desktop environment, you can glance at the Taskbar to see which Desktop programs are running. If you're a mouse or touchpad user in Metro and want to see what's running, you have to know this trick: Move the cursor into the top left corner of the screen, then drag it down along the left edge of the screen. If you have a touch screen, swipe in from the left edge, then quickly swipe back in.

? Neither environment will show you programs that are running in the other environment, but if you have a touch screen, swiping in from the left side of the screen lets you jump between open applications. The "Alt-Tab" combination does the same thing with a keyboard, in case you aren't using a touch screen.

? There are two versions of Internet Explorer, one for each environment. A Web page you open in one doesn't appear in the other, so if you're trying to find your way back to a page, it helps to remember which browser you were using.

? When using Metro on a touch screen, you close a program by first swiping your finger down from the top edge of the screen. That shrinks the window. Then you swipe your finger down to the bottom edge of the screen. Don't stray to the right or left edges of the screen, or the app will end up "docked" in a column along that edge. You can perform the same action with a mouse cursor by clicking and dragging from the top edge of the screen, but using the old "Alt-F4" command is easier.

? In the Desktop version of Internet Explorer, you can see at a glance which pages you have open in "tabs." In Metro, each Web page fills the screen, leaving no room for tabs.

To see which other pages are open on a touch-screen computer, you swipe your finger down from the top of the screen to reveal thumbnails of the other windows. Don't sweep too far, or you'll shrink the window instead.

If you're using a mouse in Metro, you right-click anywhere on the screen to reveal the tabs. Of course, this means right-clicking no longer does any of things it can be used for in previous versions of Windows, such as letting you open a link in a new tab.

? When Microsoft introduced Windows 95, some people thought it was amusing and counterintuitive that the procedure for shutting down the computer began with the "Start" button. In Windows 8, that incongruity is gone along with the Start button, but shutting down with a mouse or touchpad isn't obvious either. Move the cursor into the top right corner of the screen. A menu will pop out. Sweep down to the "Settings" button that appears, and click it. Then click "Power," then "Shut down." If you're on a touch screen, start by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, then tap "Settings."?

These signals have proven effective in inferring gender, so starting today, we are making gender targeting available to all marketers.

Those signals are in part?based on what information users provide on Twitter, including their profile names or the other Twitter?accounts they follow.

Underwood writes that a "panel of human testers has found our predictions are more than 90 percent accurate for our global?audience. And where we can't predict gender reliably, we don't???and those users won't be targetable through this feature."

Gender targeting can work, she said, for things like a "new line of cosmetics"???(or floral PCs or pink?pens)???"without having its message delivered to men not likely to be interested in that content."?

Twitter, she says, is making the move based on what?those in marketing say? they want.?

"It's a tough feature for us to pull off since we don?t ask people to share their gender on Twitter, and some people don?t identify themselves by gender anyway," Underwood writes.?

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? The words "Play Like a Champion Today" are plastered on the walls leading from the locker room to the field at both No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 8 Oklahoma, a rich piece of tradition the storied schools happen to share.

Come Saturday night, a rare meeting between the programs will test the championship mettle for both the Fighting Irish (7-0) and the Sooners (5-1).

It's just the second meeting since 1968 in a series that has fallen in Notre Dame's favor throughout the years. Oklahoma's only win in nine tries against the Irish came exactly 56 years ago in 1956.

Three times, the Sooners suffered their only loss of a season against Notre Dame, including the end of their NCAA record 47-game winning streak in 1957.

This time, a shot at a championship could be on the line again.

"We're 7-0 and now we have the chance to be 12-0 and now we have a good team coming up," said Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o, who is garnering Heisman Trophy buzz. "We can't look past that and we have to just look at Oklahoma, what they do and work on being 8-0."

Coach Bob Stoops didn't spend much time harping on the historical implications of the rivalry, but his players certainly were made aware that Oklahoma is just 1-8 all-time against Notre Dame.

"That's all great. It's unfortunate that that happened, but it's one of those things where we can't really worry about that kind of stuff," said center Gabe Ikard, who grew up a bit of a Notre Dame fan at a Catholic high school in Oklahoma City and considered playing for the Irish.

"That makes a great story for the game and it sets it up well, but what it comes down to is two teams playing each other on the field," he said.

Said safety Javon Harris: "It's ancient history. We're here to try to make history."

Seeking its ninth national championship, Notre Dame has built its undefeated start behind Te'o and the nation's second-stingiest defense, allowing just 9.4 points per game. A bruising running game that produced two 100-yard rushers a week ago has helped overcome uncertainty at quarterback, where sophomore Everett Golson and junior Tommy Rees have split time.

Coach Brian Kelly said Golson will get the start against Oklahoma after sitting out last week's win against BYU because of lingering issues from a concussion. He called Golson the healthiest he's been in weeks because of previous shoulder and toe injuries.

Rees relieved Golson to lead Notre Dame to wins against Purdue and Michigan before playing start to finish against BYU.

"The challenge for us, really, is about how we raise our game in these big games," said Kelly, whose team has outscored opponents by 30 points per game away from home this season. "We know Oklahoma is a fine football team. The challenge is always about how we bring our game up. And we have. We've played well on the road, and we're going to have to play our best game of the year on the road. That, to me, is the biggest challenge for us."

Oklahoma's first-team defense has given up just one touchdown in three games, since yielding 213 yards rushing in a 24-19 loss to Kansas State. The Sooners, trying to get back in the mix to win their eighth national title, see in Notre Dame a chance to show they can do better against a power run game.

"They're who you would expect Notre Dame to be: hard-nosed, hard-working, smashmouth-type, traditional-type football-playing kind of guys," defensive end R.J. Washington said. "They're not trying to do anything flashy. They're just trying to go out there and beat you whatever way they can. I feel like teams with history like that still play like that. Notre Dame has that kind of history. We have that kind of history."

Even if they may not be deeply familiar with all that history, the players understand that this game could be meaningful for years to come. Quarterback Landry Jones agreed that it could go a long way toward determining his legacy with the Sooners, his words coming less than 24 hours after Oklahoma showed a replay of its 1956 game against the Irish.

"Every game is important. So we approach every game that way," Te'o said. "And I think we've come a long way, and I think at this point in time in the season, every game is a signature game."

Here's a prediction, for those of you with a soft spot for culinary fortune-telling: 2013 will be the Year of the Goat. Of course, goat is a staple in many parts of the world, but it's been uncommon on menus catering to white-bread American tastes. Not for much longer.

The buzz is already starting ? goat is creeping onto menus that never would have featured it in the past. In Santa Monica, Tar & Roses offers an entire meal of wood-fired goat. Dining clubs this summer in L.A. roasted whole goats for delighted participants. In other parts of the country, too, taste-makers are organizing goat dinners, hoping to bring this underappreciated meat to their customers.

Diners and cooks looking to get a jump start on the impending Age of Goat ought to head to Gish Bac, a modest Oaxacan restaurant in Mid-City, and partake of the goat barbacoa, which is served on weekends only. Owners David Padilla and Maria Ramos cook goat in the Oaxacan style: chili-roasted for hours and hours in a pit. It comes to the table swimming in meaty juices, red from chili and tomato. After trying it wrapped in warm, fresh tortillas with a little cabbage slaw, you'll see that American chefs are late to the goat game.

Padilla and Ramos are continuing a tradition of barbacoa that began in their hometown of Tlacolula, Oaxaca. "Maria is the third generation of the family who made one of the best goat barbecues in Tlalcolua," Padilla says. "After moving to L.A. 20 years ago, they began cooking for family and friends ? "barbecue, because that's our specialty" ? and, at the urging of folks who wanted access to their barbacoa more regularly, they opened Gish Bac in 2010.

It's a small, sunny space with yellow walls, tables in front and a lunch counter in back, facing the kitchen. While the restaurant is known for its weekend barbecue items, throughout the week it has plenty of other offerings that are also a step above those at other Oaxacan restaurants.

Come in for breakfast and have eggs scrambled with the fantastic house-made chorizo, or try one of the memelas con carne ? a thick, soft masa pancake spread with musky black beans and topped with your choice of meat; the cesina, or thin slices of pork, which have been marinated and cooked, is particularly satisfying. In fact, just because this dish is on the breakfast menu doesn't mean you shouldn't order it for lunch as well; the one time I had it at dinner, the masa seemed a touch dried out, but I gobbled it up nonetheless.

There's a fantastic black mole, a swarthy, complex version that's both wicked and soothing. And a "red sauce" that I loved just as much, served over the salsa de chorizo con cesina, a slab of pork with orbs of chorizo on top. The sauce was mellow, lightly spicy and aggressively fruity, thanks to long-cooked fresh tomatoes and the light, almost citrus notes of epazote, a Oaxacan herb.

It's things like that ? a ramp-up of flavors, an unexpected ingredient ? that make Gish Bac exceptional. In the yellow mole empanada with chicken, an empanada that was more like a cheeseless quesadilla, a pert yellow sauce gets an extra kick from hoja santa, which Padilla describes as "Oaxacan mint." The leaf, layered between the tortilla and the meat, gave a pleasantly bitter sting every few bites.

The mole tamales (listed on the weekend-only part of the menu but available all the time) are intensely aromatic; the redolence of the masa paired with that dark mole is a lovely study in the concept of bittersweet.

And on weekends, there's that barbacoa. Go with a friend, and get both the goat and the lamb, which is cooked in avocado leaf and chiles and comes with a bowl of juices for dipping the meat. If you order the lamb, you'll get a plate ahead of the main course, a mixture made of all the lamb offal, deeply spiced and with a kick of dark heat. With a flavor much like a spicy black sausage, it's fantastic scooped up on corn chips.

Seated at a table near the front windows of Gish Bac, the sun setting and the remnants of goat and lamb barbacoa strewn across the table in front of us, a friend reached for another bite of the black beans that come with the tender hunks of lamb.

"There's something about everything here," she said. "Even the beans. They're just special."

When a family brings generations of tradition, craft and expertise to the table, the results are pretty special indeed.

Second woman files sexual harassment complaint against ...

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A second woman who worked with businessman Jonathan Dunning has filed a sexual harassment complaint against him, alleging, among other? things, inappropriate text messages.

The complaint was filed Sept. 11 with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The woman's lawyer, Rick Digiorgio, provided confirmation of the complaint - which is not made available to the public by the EEOC - on the condition that his client's name be withheld.

The alleged harassment occurred at a restaurant in Hoover, where Dunning is majority owner. In her complaint, the woman said the harassment began in the summer of 2011 after she sold a majority stake in the restaurant to Dunning. She continued to work there until she resigned several months ago.

"From the time that I sold the business, I was sexually harassed by the new owner," she wrote in the EEOC complaint.

"The owner [Dunning] would ask me to meet him at different restaurants," she wrote. "Occasionally, he would ask me to meet him at his home. The owner would tell me that he would like to offer me employment at his other businesses; however the conversation would usually involve what gifts he could offer me if I complied with his requests."

The complainant also said Dunning sent her "demanding text messages in the middle of the night" and would "become verbally abusive if I did not respond."

Dunning's attorney, Andrew Allen, said Dunning denies the allegations and "will vigorously defend against them."

"The party alleging these unfounded claims is a co-owner of a restaurant in which she and Mr. Dunning are both investors," Allen said in an e-mailed statement. "A dispute arose among shareholders of the business, and one investor opportunistically latched upon false allegations in a completely unrelated matter in order to leverage greater bargaining power to resolve the dispute."

This complaint comes on the heels of one filed this summer by Sharon Waltz alleging harassment by Dunning while the two worked together at the nonprofit Birmingham Health Care and Dunning's private for-profit Synergy Medical Solutions.

Dunning and Waltz are also embroiled in a custody battle over two children Dunning fathered with Waltz.

Dunning was CEO of Birmingham Health Care for about a decade ending in 2008. Earlier this year, the Birmingham News reported that while serving dual roles as CEO at Birmingham Health Care and at a health clinic in Tuskegee, Dunning formed private for-profit companies which landed at least $2 million in contracts with both health clinics. The News also reported that Birmingham Health Care sold a building it owned to a private for-profit company owned by Dunning, while Dunning was still CEO at the nonprofit.

Tropical Storm Sandy on course to hit Jamaica

Tropical Storm Sandy, which formed in the western Caribbean Sea late Monday, is expected to become a hurricane on Wednesday as it approaches Jamaica, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The storm was centered about 275 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, and had top sustained winds of 50 miles per hour, the center said in an afternoon advisory.

A hurricane warning was issued for Jamaica, where strong winds and rain are expected to begin on Tuesday.

The storm does not pose a threat to the Gulf of Mexico, where U.S. oil and gas operations are clustered.

"Right now we just have to hope and pray and keep watch," said Antonette Fisher, a resident of New Haven, a community with a history of flooding whenever it rains, to the Jamaica Observer.

Computer models showed Sandy was on a projected path that would carry it over Jamaica on Wednesday and then eastern Cuba and the Bahamas.

If the rain should come and fall like how it did a few months ago, we fear that we may lose our homes," said resident Winston Higgins told the paper.

Sandy is expected to dump 6 to 12 inches of rain across parts of Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, forecasters said. Some areas could even see 20 inches of rain.

Residents were warned that the harsh weather could spark flash floods and mudslides.

The Community Cancer Center of North Florida, located at 7000 NW 11th Place in Gainesville, is offering free breast cancer screenings today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

?There are still too many women in the state of Florida, and across the country, who are not receiving routine breast cancer screenings,? Dr. Laurel A. Warwicke said on behalf of the Community Cancer Center of North Florida in a news release announcing the screenings. ?Regular clinical exams are one of the most important ways to detect breast cancer early. Early detection saves thousands of lives every year, and if more women were to take advantage of these screenings, that number could greatly increase.?

Clinical breast exams typically can cost as much as $200, according to the center. Massages and light refreshments also will be provided as part of today?s free screenings.
