Yankees RHP Kuroda leaves with calf injury

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:39 p.m. ET May 22, 2013

BALTIMORE (AP) - New York Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda has left a game against the Baltimore Orioles because of an injury.

Kuroda gave up a third-inning single to Chris Davis before grimacing near the mound in pain. After a conference that involved a trainer and Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Kuroda walked off the field.

Earlier, the right-hander was struck in the leg by a line drive off the bat of Manny Machado. Kuroda stayed in the game, but that injury did not appear to be related to the one that ended his night, which appeared to have something to do with the upper torso.

Kuroda pitched two-plus innings before leaving. He gave up five runs and eight hits, including two homers.

Why do planets farthest from sun have highest winds? Team closes in on answer

The planets beyond Mars exhibit the highest winds speeds of any other planets in the solar system. It's a puzzle, because less energy from the sun is available there to drive higher winds.?

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / May 17, 2013

This image of Neptune was taken during the August 16-17, 1989, period as Voyager 2 photographed the planet almost continuously, but had no way to measure the winds or how deep they reach into the atmosphere. Now, scientists have turned to subtle changes in the planet's gravity for clues.

Astronomers have long marveled that the fastest wind speeds in the solar system have been clocked on the planets farthest from the sun.

Now, they may be a step closer to figuring out the energy source that drives these mighty winds.

In a new study, a team of scientists from Israel and the US finds that on Uranus and Neptune the winds appear to be confined to the top 680 miles of the atmosphere ? and may actually involve a thinner layer than that.

The results not only reveal new information about Uranus and Neptune, the researchers say. They also provide insights into the mechanisms driving the atmospheres of planets orbiting other stars, says William Hubbard, a researcher at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and a member of the team reporting the results in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

Up to now, researchers have posited two possible sources: processes confined to the top layer of the atmosphere or heat welling up from deep in the planets' interiors. Both planets emit more heat than they receive from the sun, with Neptune radiating twice as much. And while 680 miles of atmosphere seems towering by Earthly standards, it's only skin deep for Uranus and Neptune.

The winds in the planets' wide equatorial jet streams rip along at speeds of up to 450 miles an hour on Uranus and as high as 1,300 miles an hour on more-distant Neptune. Still, the flows "seem to be rather shallow, so the amount of energy that has to be supplied to keep them going is much less than might have been thought," Dr. Hubbard says.

The planets beyond Mars exhibit the highest winds speeds of any other planets in the solar system. Yet from Jupiter on out, wind speeds increase with distance, even though less energy is available from the sun to drive atmospheric circulation at each orbit along the way.

The reasons for this trend "are not well understood, actually," says Adam Showman, also with the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and a member of the study's team. But the prime suspect is atmospheric drag, or rather, the lack of it.

The outer planets' atmospheres behave more like liquids deep in their interiors, so there is virtually no surface roughness to act as a drag on winds, as there is on Earth. And as the distance between a planet and the sun increases, there is less solar energy to impart turbulence to the atmosphere, which also acts as a drag.

Hulu video site auction attracts four bidders: sources

By Ronald Grover

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former News Corp president Peter Chernin and private equity fund Guggenheim Digital Media have placed bids for Hulu, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, triggering a tug-of-war for the online video service.

Satellite operator DirecTV and cable operator Time Warner Cable Inc also put in bids, one of the people told Reuters.

Hulu was put on the auction block this year for the second time after disagreement between owners News Corp and Walt Disney Co on how best to operate a Web service that streams TV programs and other videos, Reuters previously reported.

In April, Chernin placed a bid for $500 million, plus an unspecified additional sum to cover Hulu's debt and programming commitments.

Representatives of Guggenheim, Time Warner Cable and DirecTV had no comment. A spokesman for Chernin could not be reached.

Hulu says on its website that it has more than 3 million subscribers paying $7.99 a month for its premium service and that it generated revenues of around $700 million last year. It sells advertising for its free service.

It is being advised in the sale by Guggenheim Partners, a separately funded group from the digital media unit that placed the bid.

The Los Angeles Times initially reported the bids On Thursday.

Kinect 2 Full Video Walkthrough: The Xbox Sees You Like Never Before

The new Kinect is kind of awesome. Just by the numbers, it's a huge upgrade. You can (most of) the full walkthrough we saw just a bit ago here at Microsoft's Redmond campus in the video above. Parts are jaw-dropping.

The demo is of a live action Kinect unit, which will be included with the new Xbox One. Right from the start, you can see the improved depth sensor. It's three times as sensitive, and can pick out bits as small as your t-shirt wrinkling or adjusting on your chest. The 60-degree-larger field of view helps here as well (up to six people can be on screen at once), and it has a deeper field of (accurate view, too).

And oh man, the IR sensing. It's seeing in a pitch black room! That is, like, totally absurd. And should be cool for using the Kinect at night, or for horror games, where you don't want to play in a well-lit room. Or just, you know, watching any movie ever.

The new 1080p cameras are a wide field of view, which we saw in greater detail during the Skype demo with four chat partners, and looks great, but no one's too concerned about that.

The truly impressive stuff, though, comes from the brains of the Kinect. Its improved skeleton mapping is crazy accurate, and can track your individual hand motions and shoulder shrugs. The muscle tracker is also borderline ridiculous. It can tell what parts of your body have pressure on them. It knows where you're putting your weight as you lean side to side, and how much power goes into each motion, by tracking speed. It knows if you lob a slow fake punch, and it knows if you slice a fast uppercut through the air, and shows you with popping white circles around your fists or feet or head. Orientation tracking is cool as well, and will apply more to how your character moves around in games.

The heart rate monitor, which reads your heart rate just by freaking LOOKING AT YOU, seems pretty accurate, but we obviously weren't able to test against an actual heart monitor. Still, do you see this, guys, seriously this is a thing that will be in living rooms. It's very cool.

The face recognition recognizes you, personally, and can tell if you're "engaged" or not engaged, meaning if you say "Xbox pause" while not looking at the TV, it won't listen to you. This seems like something you'd maybe want to turn off, but it's still impressive it can read your expression and know if you're happy, sad, or bored.

Kinect 2 doesn't just see you, though; it can hear you too. In fact, it can hear your voice, specifically, through whatever ambient game and/or movie noise that's going on around you. Want to give a command in the middle of a particularly loud concert video or melee? You don't have to shout for Kinect 2 to listen and comply.

Calling this feature set impressive is an undersell. It's breakthrough technology on many levels, with applications far beyond watching content or playing games. It's the future, and we all get to see it today.

?I can?t believe I?m getting a humor prize from the Kennedy Center,? Burnett said in a statement. ?It?s almost impossible to be funnier than the people in Washington.?

Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein praised Burnett's ability to make audiences laugh over many decades.

?From her television program and appearances, as well as her performances on Broadway and in film, Carol Burnett has entertained generations of fans with her vibrant wit and hilarious characters,? Rubenstein said in a statement.?

Other recent winners of the prize include Ellen DeGeneres, Will Ferrell, and Tina Fey. The award was first given out in 1998 and is often bestowed on an entertainer who has worked as both an actor and a writer. Fey is currently the youngest honoree ever.

During the ceremony, the winner is generally honored with video segments of his or her past work and ribbings from others in the business. ?

Burnett came to the public?s attention when she starred in the 1959 Broadway production of the musical ?Once Upon a Mattress? and is best-known for her CBS sketch program ?The Carol Burnett Show,? which ran from 1967 to 1978. Her film credits include ?Annie,? ?Noises Off,? and ?Horton Hears a Who!? She is also behind a memoir published this year, "Carrie and Me," as well as two other autobiographical works, "One More Time" and "This Time Together."

Video: Engineers create on-wetting fabric drains sweat

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Waterproof fabrics that whisk away sweat could be the latest application of microfluidic technology developed by bioengineers at the University of California, Davis.

The new fabric works like human skin, forming excess sweat into droplets that drain away by themselves, said inventor Tingrui Pan, professor of biomedical engineering. One area of research in Pan's Micro-Nano Innovations Laboratory at UC Davis is a field known as microfluidics, which focuses on making "lab on a chip" devices that use tiny channels to manipulate fluids. Pan and his colleagues are developing such systems for applications like medical diagnostic tests.

Graduate students Siyuan Xing and Jia Jiang developed a new textile microfluidic platform using hydrophilic (water-attracting) threads stitched into a highly water-repellent fabric. They were able to create patterns of threads that suck droplets of water from one side of the fabric, propel them along the threads and expel them from the other side.

"We intentionally did not use any fancy microfabrication techniques so it is compatible with the textile manufacturing process and very easy to scale up," said Xing, lead graduate student on the project.

It's not just that the threads conduct water through capillary action. The water-repellent properties of the surrounding fabric also help drive water down the channels. Unlike conventional fabrics, the water-pumping effect keeps working even when the water-conducting fibers are completely saturated, because of the sustaining pressure gradient generated by the surface tension of droplets.

The rest of the fabric stays completely dry and breathable. By adjusting the pattern of water-conducting fibers and how they are stitched on each side of the fabric, the researchers can control where sweat is collected and where it drains away on the outside.

Workout enthusiasts, athletes and clothing manufacturers are all interested in fabrics that remove sweat and let the skin breathe. Cotton fibers, for example, wick away sweat ? but during heavy exercise, cotton can get soaked, making it clingy and uncomfortable.

A paper describing the research was published recently in the journal Lab on a Chip. The work was funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

Driving In Detroit? Expect To Pay Highest Auto Insurance In Country ...

(credit: Gillian Reilly/CBS Detroit)

(credit: Gillian Reilly/CBS Detroit)

DETROIT (WWJ) ? With auto insurance rates in Detroit among the highest in the nation, some Democratic state legislators say they have ideas for real reform.

There are a lot of problems with the Republican sponsored no fault bill say some Detroit Democrats.

First, they say a savings of $125 per vehicle for one year of auto insurance is not enough when you consider the average cost of car insurance is five thousand dollars in Detroit.

It?s just not enough says State Representative Thomas Stallworth, (D-Detroit) not when you consider the real cost of insuring a vehicle in Detroit.

?Detroit?s average premium of five thousand dollars is the nation?s most expensive and is some twelve hundred dollars higher than second place Philadelphia,? he tells WWJ?s Marie Osborne.

These Democrats want changes on how auto insurance is calculated .

?Presently, a driver with a DUI and a good credit score gets a better rate than a laid off factory worker with a challenged credit score, who has never had a ticket,? said Stallworth.

Often, the cost of insurance exceeds the cost of the vehicle.

Democrats are outlining points of change they?d like to see including: prohibiting the use of a credit score and education to determine a premium and disallowing steerage to collision shops owned by insurance companies.

The number one issue these legislators hear about from their constituents? The high cost of auto insurance.

(AP) ? Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will miss at least three weeks of offseason workouts after a procedure to remove a cyst from his back.

The team's website reported Tuesday, the first day of organized team workouts, that Romo underwent the procedure last month and could return for the mandatory minicamp that starts June 11. He will be ready for training camp in July.

Romo became the highest-paid player in franchise history in March when he signed a six-year, $108 million extension with $55 million guaranteed, more than Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco of Baltimore.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the outpatient procedure was performed before the NFL draft. Romo was restricted to light conditioning work in April but has been cleared to throw.

"If this was the regular season and I had to play next week, I could," Romo told the newspaper Monday. "That's why I did it now. This will have no effect on training camp."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said Romo will have an expanded role in the offense, and his quarterback has committed to "Peyton Manning-type time" in trying to turn Dallas into a Super Bowl contender again.

Backup Kyle Orton will take most of the snaps in Romo's absence. He signed as a free agent last year but played in just one game, a blowout loss to Chicago. The Cowboys also have second-year player Nick Stephens and undrafted rookie Dalton Williams on the roster.

A healthy Romo is a huge factor with coach Jason Garrett's job on the line in 2013. Garrett is unlikely to return if the Cowboys miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

The last time Romo missed significant playing time, former coach Wade Phillips was fired and replaced by Garrett in the middle of a 6-10 season in 2010. Romo was out 10 games with a broken collarbone.

Romo played through a broken rib early in the 2011 season and stayed healthy last year. Both seasons ended with losses to NFC East rivals in finales with playoff berths on the line.

Senators work through changes to immigration bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senators working on a wide-ranging immigration bill have agreed to tighten controls on the asylum system that allows people fleeing war or persecution to find refuge in the U.S.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina offered the amendment, which would terminate asylum or refugee status for anyone who returns home to the country they fled, unless they can show a good reason for doing so.

Graham said the change was merited in light of the Boston Marathon bombings. The brothers who allegedly set off the bombs arrived in the U.S. as boys when their family sought asylum here.

The amendment was approved on voice vote Monday as the Senate Judiciary Committee entered its third week of weighing amendments to a bipartisan immigration bill.

(AP) ? It could be an anxious wait of up to two months for people in a small Florida city to find out who won the highest Powerball jackpot in history: an estimated $590.5 million.

The lucky ticket was bought sometime Saturday or earlier at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, a city of about 13,000 people best known around the state for its brand of spring water with the same name.

The winner has 60 days to claim the lump-sum cash option, estimated around $376.9 million, at the Florida Lottery's office in Tallahassee. No one had come forward as of Sunday afternoon.

"It never happens this quickly," lottery spokesman David Bishop said. "If they know they won, they're going to contact their attorney or an accountant first so they can get their affairs in order."

The winner wasn't Matthew Bogel. On Sunday, he loaded groceries into his car after shopping at the Publix. He shook his head when asked about the jackpot.

"It's crazy, isn't it?" he said. "That's so much money."

It's an amount too high for many to imagine. Compare it to the budget for the city of Zephyrhills: This year's figure is just more than $49 million. The winning Powerball jackpot is 12 times that.

Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous said there are a lot of rumors about who won, but the store doesn't know. "We're excited for the winner or winners," she said.

Plenty of people in Zephyrhills are wondering whether it's someone they know.

Joan Albertson drove to the Publix early Sunday morning with her camera in hand, in case the winner emerged. She said she bought a ticket at a store across the street, and the idea of winning that much money was still something of a shock.

"Oh, there's so much good that you could do with that amount of money." Albertson said. "I don't even know where to begin."

Zephyrhills is a small city in Pasco County, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. Once a rural farming town, it's now known as a hotbed for skydiving activity, and the home to large retiree mobile home parks and the water bottled from the natural springs that surround the area.

And now, one lucky lottery ticket.

"I'm getting text messages and messages from Facebook going, 'uh, did you win the lottery?'" Sandra Lewis said. "No, I didn't win, guys. Sorry."

Sara Jeltis said her parents in Michigan texted her with the news Sunday morning.

"Well, it didn't click until I came here," she said, gesturing to the half-dozen TV live trucks humming in the Publix parking lot. "And I'm like, 'Wow I can't believe it, it's shocking!' Out of the whole country, this Publix, in little Zephyrhills would be the winner."

With four out of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, lottery executives said Saturday that someone was almost certain to win the game's highest jackpot, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes.

The winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.

Estimates had earlier put the jackpot at around $600 million. But Powerball's online site said Sunday that the jackpot had reached an estimated $590.5 million.

The world's largest jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012.

Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery, initially confirmed that one Florida winning ticket had been sold. He told The Associated Press that following the Florida winner, the Powerball grand prize was being reset at an estimated jackpot of $40 million, or about $25.1 million cash value.

The chances of winning the prize were astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimated that about 80 percent of those possible combinations had been purchased recently.

The longshot odds didn't deter people across Powerball-playing states ? 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands ? from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday.

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot ? people are interested in the easy investment.

"Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small," he said. "Two dollars gets you a chance."

Lewis, who went to the Publix on Sunday to buy water, said she didn't play ? and she isn't upset about it.

"Life goes on," she said, shrugging. "I'm good."

Kanye's 'SNL' Performance Includes 'New Slaves' & 'Black Skinhead'

Kanye Snl Performance

Kanye West performed on "SNL."

Kanye West hit "Saturday Night Live" this weekend for a performance of two tracks. The rapper was the musical guest on Saturday night's episode, hosted by Ben Affleck.

West took the stage to perform "New Slaves" and "Black Skinhead" during the episode. Censors seemed to miss a number of choice words, as West was audibly heard using the n-word during both songs.

The performance was the second big Kanye stunt in as many days. The 35-year-old rapper premiered "New Slaves," by projecting audio and video for the song on the sides of buildings across the world.

At a recent performance, West shot down rumors that he would participate in a sketch on the show. "Someone asked me, 'When you do 'SNL,' are you going to do a skit about the paparazzi and humanize yourself?'" West said during the show on Wednesday, referencing a recent run-in with the paparazzi. "What the f--k do I have to apologize for? When did I become inhuman? Or was it them demonizing me and harassing me that made me less than human?"

The episode also marked the end of cast member Bill Hader's run with the program. The season finale was Hader's last episode of "SNL," after eight years on the show.

Patti LuPone, Seth Rudetsky Set For Musical Show At London's Leicester Square Theatre

Despite a white-hot stage and screen career spanning more than four decades, Patti LuPone has no time for nostalgia -- and with good reason.

The powerhouse performer is once again on a professional roll, having just landed a plum part in ?American Horror Story: Coven? alongside Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates and series regular Jessica Lange. Earlier in 2013, she wrapped a smash New York run of her ?Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda? live act, just weeks after releasing ?Far Away Places,? her sterling new CD of torch songs and cabaret standards recorded before an ecstatic audience at Manhattan nightspot 54 Below.

Fortunately for LuPone's fans, however, there's Seth Rudetsky. The New York-based musician, writer, actor, radio host and all-around Broadway savant has an uncanny ability to ?manipulate? LuPone, who is otherwise forward-thinking with her material, into performing songs from her stage triumphs in ?Evita,? ?Les Mis?rables,? ?Anything Goes? and ?Gypsy? live.

Rudetsky and LuPone's latest act -- a hilarious, spontaneous and even poignant mix of musical performances paired with behind-the-scenes theater dish -- premiered to great acclaim at the Art House Theater in Provincetown, Mass., last summer. In June, the pair will hit the road for the first time, heading to London's Leicester Square Theatre for six performances, no two of which will be identical. It's the closest thing fans will experience to a Patti LuPone request hour, with Rudetsky acting as both diligent host and enthusiastic devotee.

Take a look at some of Patti LuPone's best performances, then scroll down to keep reading:

  • 'Rainbow High,' 1980

  • 'Buenos Aires,' 1981

  • 'Pittsburgh,' 1983

  • 'Les Miserables,' 1985

  • 'Anything Goes,' 1988

  • 'Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered,' 1992

  • 'Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again' With Audra McDonald, 2001

  • 'The Worst Pies In London'

  • 'Everything's Coming Up Roses,' 2008

  • 'The Ladies Who Lunch,' 2011

?I think Patti feels secure with me, and she knows that I'm going to make her look good,? Rudetsky said. ?I think she appreciates and is flattered that I know her work so well. It?s a combination of my technical skill and my fandom. I?m not just some fan saying, ?Do it!?"

The show is also a unique act of submission for the legendary diva, whose commanding theatrical performances remain without parallel. At one New York rehearsal, Rudetsky came armed with the sheet music for tunes from ?Evita? and ?Les Mis?rables?: ?Eva and Magaldi/Eva Beware of the City? and ?Fantine's Death.? (Of the notable omission of ?Don?t Cry for Me, Argentina,? Rudetsky noted, ?It?s mostly about what I want to hear live in Patti?s entire repertoire ? I?m not so into the standards. I like the rarer stuff from shows -- the weirder sh*t.?)

At first, LuPone appeared reluctant -- ?Must I do this? I'm going to cry my eyes out,? she griped as Rudetsky took to the piano -- but she soon obliged, launching into the fiery, life-or-death belt that has become her signature.

?The entire show is really in Seth?s head ? I?m Italian, so performances and memories go hand-in-hand for me,? LuPone said. ?Seth always has to promise me he's going to be at his funniest; otherwise it?s dull and I?m not interested. It's electric when he's funny.?

Rudetsky, who has worked extensively alongside stars like Betty Buckley and Audra McDonald, says LuPone remains a singular performer in the theater world.

?A lot of people can belt high notes -- I always say that my mother can belt a high note [laughs], but she doesn't have the vibrato and the tone is horrible,? he said. ?Patti is able to belt, but on top of that, the quality of her voice is so amazing, and plus, she's a Juillard-trained actress.?

The show will also allow audiences to witness LuPone performing songs from roles she?d hoped to play in London?s West End, but for one reason or another, wasn?t able to do so.

?Since ?Les Mis,? my appearances haven?t been successful, or the stuff that I wanted to go to London with -- whether it was something I was nominated for a Tony or even won a Tony for here -- I?m not going over there for,? she said, joking that her last London appearance consisted of just ?eight bars of music? at theater anniversary event.

Of his working relationship with LuPone, Rudetsky offered a more glib assessment, noting, ?She curses me out, and I raise the key!?

Patti LuPone and Seth Rudetsky play London?s Leicester Square Theatre June 16 through 23. For more information, click here.

Elizabeth Swisher, M.D.: Thank You, Angelina Jolie

Get Healthy Living Alerts:

Thank you, Angelina Jolie! Your confidence and courage is inspiring and will no doubt help thousands of women face the same difficult decisions. Knowledge is power, and understanding your genetic risk of cancer allowed you to take charge of your future and change your destiny. As a gynecologic oncologist and cancer genetics specialist, I am deeply saddened every time I take care of a woman fighting advanced ovarian cancer who is in that position because of a genetic risk inherited from her mother or father. Often there is a family history of cancer that should have alerted her medical providers to her cancer risk, which means that cancer could have been prevented. Wendy, Sharon, and Karen are just a few of my dear patients who died needlessly of hereditary ovarian cancer, and who inspire me every day to re-double my research and clinical efforts to identify genetic risk and prevent women's cancers. We aim to provide every woman the power exercised by Angelina -- to understand their personal cancer risk and make individual choices to minimize that risk.

Too many women have genetic testing only after a cancer is diagnosed. There are several reasons for that unfortunate delay. Not all women have a strong family history of cancer, even though they have an inherited risk. For example, some women have inherited their cancer risk from their dad, who is unlikely to have breast cancer and will certainly not get ovarian cancer. And even strong family histories of cancer may be overlooked by healthy women and their providers. The high cost of genetic testing for cancer risk is another obstacle. For instance, Medicare will only pay for cancer genetic testing after someone gets cancer, but not before. That policy is counterintuitive when the goal of cancer genetic testing should be identifying risk in order to allow effective cancer prevention. Most insurance companies will not cover BRCA1 or BRCA2 testing for men. President Obama, your mother died of ovarian cancer, and in my opinion, you should have testing to see if your girls could be at risk. But be prepared to pay cash.

You have probably heard about how much cheaper DNA sequencing has become in the last few years. We can already sequence all the human genes for a thousand dollars and articles abound that predict that whole genome DNA sequencing will become commonplace and facilitate personalized medicine. Then why is most cancer genetics testing done one gene at a time for many thousands of dollars? My colleague Mary-Claire King, Ph.D., who discovered the BRCA1 gene in 1990, has been working with me and others to develop cancer gene panels that in a single blood test can sequence all the known cancer genes. In my research, I have used Dr. King's new test that she named BROCA to find the genetic cause of ovarian cancer in dozens of families. We have discovered that BRCA1 and BRCA2 are not the only ovarian and breast cancer genes, and another 15 genes account for about 30 percent of inherited ovarian cancer. We could test all of these genes at the same time in a single blood test including BRCA1 and BRCA2 at less than the current cost of the BRCA gene test in the U.S.

You might ask: If we can already do this type of genetic testing in a research setting, what is holding back a universal cancer gene test for patients? The barrier is gene patents. Thousands of human genes are patented in the U.S., including BRCA1 and BRCA2. If Dr. King had won the race to publish the final BRCA1 sequence, I guarantee you that BRCA1 would not be patented today. The U.S. Supreme court has recently heard arguments from a lawsuit by the ACLU against Myriad Genetics, the company that holds the BRCA1 and BRCA2 patents. The court should rule next month on the legitimacy of these gene patents. We already have the genetic tools to identify many women who are at risk before they get cancer and at a lower cost. Let's hope that we can soon apply these tools rationally during clinical care to decrease the cancer burden in this country.

What can you do?

-- Know your own family history. Ask your parents and grandparents about your family history, ask who had cancer, what kind of cancer (e.g., where the cancer started, not where it spread to) and at what age they were diagnosed. Share that information with your medical providers. If you are concerned about your cancer risk, ask for a referral to see a certified genetic counselor to talk about your family history.

-- Protest the patenting of genes. Even if the Supreme Court does come out against the Myriad patents, it is likely to be a narrow ruling that will not apply to all gene patents. Join me in standing against patents of natural genes. Investigators that accept federal dollars for research should keep their discoveries in the public domain.

-- Support medical research that increases our understanding of cancer, including how to recognize risk and tailor cancer prevention. Ask your congressman to support federally-sponsored research such as the NIH and consider raising money and awareness for private cancer research foundations.

Let's applaud Angelina Jolie. Dealing with cancer risk involves highly-personal decisions. Here is a woman already in the public eye and under constant scrutiny who made an entirely selfless decision to share her story with millions. Many high-risk women like Angelina face criticism for their "drastic" choices to undergo preventive surgery. I admire Angelina for taking the unselfish view that she will do whatever it takes to be sure she will be around to parent her children. And I commend Angelina for making her decision public and thereby supporting other women who face an increased cancer risk.

Scott Alario Photographs Tender Moments Relating to Fatherhood ...

Scott_Alario_Photography

We are on a search for the spiritually significant, the magic in every day. What will we find that?s worth passing down? What will we conjure??Scott Alario

Photographer Scott Alario is based in Providence, Rhode Island. His series What We Conjure was made with an 8?10 view camera, and adds to the great lineage of photographers like Emmet Gowin and Nicholas Nixon who have documented those most dear to them. Alario explores his role as a father by making these pictures, occasionally appearing in them himself.

Alario has written a poem that serves as a fitting accompaniment to the images.

I don?t believe that the universe had a beginning, and nor will it have an end.
Both beginnings and ends speak of time, and time is a construct that will fail when our ability to communicate it does.

Energy moves in circles, time?s last moment stands closely to its first.
So how can it be said that we came to be, or came to be wondering about such things as the beginning of it all?

I saw you gain consciousness. It happened.
One day you weren?t, and then you were.
It was something about the sheen in your eyes, lasers:
that day they pierced me.

That?s how it must have been.?One day there was just consciousness.
I like to think it was a family, all together at once, urgently, or it could have been a slowly building sense, an awareness growing a mutually shared question, or an endless list of questions.

We will live our lives wondering, and won?t ever know.
In wondering is joy, and wondering together is an ecstatic experience that makes the going in circles part seem worth it.

New method proposed for detecting gravitational waves from ends of universe

May 16, 2013 ? A new window into the nature of the universe may be possible with a device proposed by scientists at the University of Nevada, Reno and Stanford University that would detect elusive gravity waves from the other end of the cosmos. Their paper describing the device and process was published in the physics journal Physical Review Letters.

"Gravitational waves represent one of the missing pieces of Einstein's theory of general relativity," Andrew Geraci, University of Nevada, Reno physics assistant professor, said. "While there is a global effort already out there to find gravitational waves, our proposed method is an alternate approach with greater sensitivity in a significantly smaller device.

"Our detector is complementary to existing gravitational wave detectors, in that it is more sensitive to sources in a higher frequency band, so we could see signals that other detectors might potentially miss."

Geraci and his colleague Asimina Arvanitaki, a post-doctoral fellow in the physics department at Stanford University, propose using a small, laser-cooled, tunable sensor that "floats" in an optical cavity so it is not affected by friction. Geraci is seeking funding to begin building a small prototype in the next year.

"Gravity waves propagate from the remote corners of our universe, they stretch and squeeze the fabric of space-time," Geraci said. "A passing gravity wave changes the physically measured distance between two test masses -- small discs or spheres. In our approach, such a mass experiences minimal friction and therefore is very sensitive to small forces."

While indirect evidence for gravity waves was obtained by studying the changing orbital period of a neutron star binary, resulting in the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physics, gravity waves have yet to be directly observed.

"Directly detecting gravitational waves from astrophysical sources enables a new type of astronomy, which can give us "pictures" of the sky analogous to what we have by using telescopes," Geraci said. "In this way the invention of a gravitational wave detector, which lets us "see" the universe through gravity waves, is analogous to the invention of the telescope, which let us see the universe using light. Having such detectors will allow us to learn more about astrophysical objects in our universe, such as black holes."

The approach the authors describe can exceed the sensitivity of next-generation gravitational wave observatories by up to an order of magnitude in the frequency range of 50 to 300 kilohertz.

Their paper, "Detecting high-frequency gravitational waves with optically levitated sensors," appeared in Physical Review Letters, a publication of the physics organization American Physical Society.

Geraci also presented his research at the annual American Physical Society Meeting in Denver in April. The meeting is attended by particle physicists, nuclear physicists and astrophysicists to share new research results and insights.

Cyclone Mahasen fizzles as it hits Bangladesh

COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? Cyclone Mahasan weakened Thursday afternoon into a tropical storm and then dissipated, causing far less damage than had been feared as it passed over Bangladesh and spared Myanmar almost entirely, meteorological officials said.

At least 45 deaths related to Mahasen were reported in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, but officials had prepared for a far greater storm. Bangladesh evacuated 1 million people from coastal areas and the United Nations warned that 8.2 million people could face life-threatening conditions.

The cyclone lost power as it shed huge amounts of rainfall and then veered west of its predicted path, sparing major Bangladeshi population areas, including Chittagong and the seaside resort of Cox's Bazar, said Mohammad Shah Alam, director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Coastal regions were also spared major damage because the storm hit during low tide, which meant there was no major tidal surge, he said.

"Thank God we have been spared this time," local government administrator Ruhul Amin said.

The storm's impact in Myanmar's Rakhine state, where officials were having trouble evacuating tens of thousands of displaced Rohingya people, was minimal.

"It's all over, and we are very relieved that we didn't have any unfortunate incident in Rakhine state due to the cyclone," Win Myaing, Rakhine's regional spokesman said.

In Cox's Bazar, tens of thousands of people had fled shanty homes along the coast and packed into cyclone shelters, hotels, schools and government office buildings. But by Thursday afternoon, the sun was shining and Amin said he planned to close the shelters by the evening.

The storm's slow movement toward Bangladesh gave the government plenty of warning to get people to safety, Amin said.

"But for the evacuation, the casualties would have been higher," he said.

In addition, river ferries and boat services were suspended, and scores of factories near the choppy Bay of Bengal were closed. The military said it kept 22 navy ships and 19 Air Force helicopters at the ready. By Thursday night, ferry service had resumed.

A 1991 cyclone that slammed into Bangladesh from the Bay of Bengal killed an estimated 139,000 people and left millions homeless. In 2008, Myanmar's southern delta was devastated by Cyclone Nargis, which swept away entire farming villages and killed more than 130,000 people. Both those cyclones were much more powerful than Mahasen, which hit land with maximum wind speeds of about 100 kph (62 mph) and quickly weakened, said Alam, the meteorological official.

By the time it hit Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, wind speeds had plunged to 25 kph (16 mph), Alam said. The storm then dissipated entirely, he said.

Bangladesh's government said at least 10 people were killed by the storm across the nation's vast coastal region, most either from the collapse of mud walls or hit by fallen trees.

Related heavy rains and flooding in Sri Lanka were blamed for eight deaths earlier this week.

At least eight people ? and possibly many more ? were killed in Myanmar as they fled the cyclone Monday night, when overcrowded boats carrying more than 100 Rohingya capsized. Only 43 people had been rescued by Thursday, and more than 50 were still missing.

Babul Akther, a Bangladeshi police official in Tekhnaf close to Myanmar border, said police there found 19 bodies Thursday in the Naaf River, which separates the two nations. He said most of the decomposing bodies were of children, and they suspect they are victims of the boats filled with Rohingya that capsized Monday.

Much attention was focused on western Myanmar because of the crowded, low-lying camps where many Rohingya refused to evacuate.

U.N. officials, hoping they would inspire greater trust, had fanned out across the area to encourage people to leave.

In Rakhine state, around 140,000 people ? mostly Rohingya ? have been living in the camps since last year, when two outbreaks of sectarian violence between the Muslim minority and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists forced many Rohingya from their homes.

Nearly half the displaced live in coastal areas that were considered highly vulnerable to storm surges and flooding from Cyclone Mahasen.

"Pack and leave," a Rakhine state official, U Hla Maung, warned before the storm hit as he walked through a camp near Sittwe, the state capital. Accompanied by more than a dozen soldiers and riot police, he suggested that people living there move to a nearby railroad embankment, then left without offering help.

Some Rohingya took down their tents and hauled their belongings away in cycle-rickshaws, or carried them in bags balanced on their heads.

Ko Hla Maung, an unemployed fisherman, was among those who had not left as of Thursday morning.

"We have no safe place to move, so we're staying here, whether the storm comes or not," he said. "... The soldiers want to take us to a village closer to the sea, and we're not going to do that. ... If the storm is coming, then that village will be destroyed."
