When my wife and I last stayed at Four Seasons in Thailand in May 2011, it was on the ?Great Expectations? Babymoon package at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui??our last luxe hurrah? I called it at the time, as the birth of our first son rapidly approached.
As it turns out, I was wrong.
Just over a year later, we were on our way to another Four Seasons?this time as a family of three. To mark our son?s first birthday on July 8, we were vacationing at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai. Talk about luxury.
Picked up in a black limo, we were whisked to the outskirts of the northern Thai city and delivered to the resort lobby with amazing views of rice paddy fields. Situated in the center of the resort, these are actually farmed. Every night as dusk falls, the workers wind their way through the field, clanging cymbals on their way ?home? for the night.
We had missed Four Seasons. From the bellboy to the butler, hotel manager to the housekeeper, everyone went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. It was a true holiday experience, even with a kid, where you don?t have to want or worry about anything.
Case in point: the resort was incredibly kid-friendly, with a basket of baby toiletries awaiting in our room, a cot already set up, high chairs at every restaurant, and pool toys appearing out of nowhere?all accompanied by staff who fawned over Kaian?s every little move. One very lucky boy, indeed, our son was surprised with not one, but two cakes on his birthday, which he devoured in a big, chocolatey mess (helped by mum and dad).
Highlights for my wife Kiri included Thai cooking lessons with the very cool Chef Pirun, swimming in the infinity pool surrounded by forest and mountains, a wonderful spa treatment and a magical, candle-lit dinner in our own private pavilion. (After Kaian had gone to bed, we washed it all down with a chilled glass of Chiang Mai Hills white wine).
Kaian loved his first-ever bike ride, meeting the resort?s tame water buffalo and his birthday present: a little stuffed white water buffalo. Where will we spend his second birthday? I think we all know the answer to that?
