DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Peace activists don't want drone aircraft hovering over Afghanistan to be powered from a control room in Iowa. ?? ? Waving signs that said "No War Drones, Des Moines," activists protested Wednesday morning outside the Des Moines Air National Guard Base. ?? ? The military plans to pilot drone aircraft at the base, now that the F-16 jets based there will be removed. ?? ? Local military and elected officials support the move to operate what are known as "remotely piloted aircraft" from Iowa, noting that this will preserve most of the roughly 1,000 jobs on the base. ?? ? But Leah Bolger, national president of Veterans for Peace, say U.S. drones have killed thousands of people and the military's program has limited oversight. ?
A great looking door creates a great first impression for room, but upgrading doors can be expensive. A cheaper DIY solution is to replace just the door knob. Most homes have very generic builder grades handles or knobs. Vintage door knobs can create a very unique appeal, especially for traditional style homes.
Types of Door Knobs
While knobs come in all sorts of shapes, antique versions are more defined by the material composition. The popular ones seem to be porcelain, glass/crystal, and brass. Porcelain is my personal favorite but also fetches a hefty price. A cheaper option is to buy brass versions and paint it white to give it a similar look.
Crystal is also expensive, but, like porcelain, there is a cheaper substitute. Glass knobs are cheaper and look just as good. The plastic versions are the cheapest but do have some visual and?textural?differences.
Mechanics
A lot of the older units will have different mechanics so installation will be difficult. It is best to make sure it is compatible with your current door. An alternative is to buy modern versions with the vintage look. They look just as good and are compatible with modern doors.

PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) - General Motors says the company will invest $200 million at their Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters in Pontiac to build a new test wing.
The construction is expected to be completed in the second half of 2014. It is part of GM's commitment to invest $1.5 billion in it's North American facilities during 2013.
The expansion plan calls for engineering work that is currently being done in Wixom, Castleton, Indiana and Torrance, California, to be moved to Pontiac.
The work being done at Wixom will be moved by mid-2015. Torrance will be moved by the end of 2014 and Castleton will be moved by mid-2014.
GM R&D's Propulsion Systems Research Lab in Warren will also relocated to Pontiac. The facility will be transferred by mid-2015.
The moves are expected to create about 400 new jobs.
However, GM also announced today that the Performance Build Center, which is currently located in Wixom, will be moving to the GM's Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky sometime in the first quarter of 2014.?

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens' reputation for trash-talking arrived at the Super Bowl before they did.
While the Ravens were en route from Baltimore to the Big Easy, the San Francisco 49ers were already preparing for war of words with the chattiest team in the NFL.
"Most teams don't really talk that much, but I've heard stories about them talking a lot," San Francisco guard Alex Boone said. "Guys have told me not to get into it with them. We're not here to get into a yelling match."
That might change a bit Sunday when both teams play for the NFL championship at the Superdome.
The Ravens developed their swagger years ago under coach Brian Billick, who rarely backed away from a microphone and made no effort to put a muzzle on his players, most notably Shannon Sharpe and Tony Siragusa ? both of whom are now being paid to blab as television commentators.
Baltimore's current coach, John Harbaugh, doesn't encourage such brashness. But he won't stop it, either. After the Ravens beat New England to win the AFC championship, Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard insisted that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady should be fined for a leg-up slide even though Brady apologized afterward.
Linebacker Terrell Suggs topped that in an interview with Yahoo Sports, calling the Patriots "arrogant" and telling them "to have fun at the Pro Bowl."
Now that he's on football's biggest stage, Suggs has taken it down a few decibels, judging by his tone at Monday's media interviews. Here's a bulletin: He said nothing the 49ers might consider clipping from a newspaper and pinning to the bulletin board for motivation.
"I'm going to talk to you guys with the obligated time that I'm supposed to talk to you guys ... and I'm going to stick to that," Suggs said.
Asked if he might say something juicy later in the week, Suggs replied, "Nothing I do is scripted. You've got to wait and see what I come up with."
It might be worth the wait, although Harbaugh seems to think Suggs and the rest of the team will resist the temptation.
"Our guys are class guys. We'll play with character, we'll play with class," Harbaugh said. "We'll be a tough, hard-nosed football team. That's the way we'll play. Before the game, after the game."
That's not what the 49ers have heard.
"Talk is cheap. I'll leave it at that," linebacker NaVorro Bowman said. "We've all got to play with those pads on. That's what does the talking for us."
Linebacker Ray Lewis does much of the talking for the Baltimore defense. After leading the unit in an emotional chant following each pregame workout, Lewis yells the signals on the field and usually has something bold to say to an opponent he's dropped to the turf.
"Ray and Suggs, they like to talk a lot but they're great players, so it's kind of warranted," 49ers fullback Bruce Miller said.
"I think that's just the way they motivate their team," San Francisco cornerback Tarrell Brown added. "Everybody feeds off that. Whatever works for them, that's good."
When Lewis told his teammates earlier this month that he was going to retire after the current postseason run, Suggs thought the team's vocal leader was merely gearing up for another speech.
"He always talks to the team before the game, the middle of the season and going into the playoffs," Suggs said. "I thought it was another day at the office, but he said some key words. It struck me. He said maybe it was time to start doing something else and it just kind of puzzled me and then it hit me. It really focused our team, not only to get it done for him, but just how precious this time and these moments are. You don't get these opportunities every day."
Lewis may the most prolific talker on the team, but he's not the only one who enjoys yapping. As soon as they got off the plane from Baltimore, Suggs, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Matt Birk, Ray Rice and Joe Flacco were made available to the media.
While Lewis discussed, among other things, his pending retirement, his family and his love for God, Reed talked about everything from his training habits to his experience as a punt, pass and kick participant in New Orleans more than two decades ago.
None of it was going to get the 49ers riled up before Sunday's game, which is just the way Harbaugh likes it.
"I think we're very respectful of our opponents," the coach said. "We always have been, and our opponents have respected us over the years. The team we're playing is built the same way. We've got a lot of respect for the 49ers. We've got a lot of respect for their coach, the coaching staff, their players, and I expect it to be played in that way."
Jan. 29, 2013 ? Hydrogen sulfide* (H2S) may play a wide-ranging role in staving off aging, according to a paper published online ahead of print in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biology. In this review article, a team from China explores the compound's plethora of potential anti-aging pathways.
"H2S has been gaining increasing attention as an important endogenous signaling molecule because of its significant effects on the cardiovascular and nervous systems," the team writes. The evidence is mounting, they note, that hydrogen sulfide slows aging by inhibiting free-radical reactions, by activating SIRT1, an enzyme believed to be a regulator of lifespan, and probably through its interactions with a gene, klotho, which appears to have its own market basket of anti-aging activity.
Hydrogen sulfide is produced within the human body, and has a variety of important physiological effects. For example, it relaxes the vascular endothelium and smooth muscle cells, which is important to maintaining clean arteries as one ages, says first author Zhi-Sheng Jiang, of the University of South China, Hunan. It functions as an antioxidant. And it inhibits expression of pro-inflammatory factors, all of which "imply an important role in aging and age-associated diseases," according to the paper. For example, mice lacking CSE, the gene for an enzyme involved in producing H2S, manifest extensive, premature arteriosclerosis, an inevitable consequence of aging, says Jiang.
The gene, klotho, which appears to be upregulated by hydrogen sulfide, is thought to extend lifespan via a number of different pathways, some of which promote production of endogenous antioxidants, according to the report. Produced in the kidneys, it has direct angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibiting activity; that is, it's an ACE inhibitor, just like certain drugs that mitigate high blood pressure. Not surprisingly, plasma H2S declines with age, and is lower in spontaneously hypertensive rats than in those with normal blood pressure. More generally, a lack of H2S is implicated in cardiovascular disease.
A decline in H2S is also thought to undermine neurological health. Endogenous H2S has been found wanting in an animal model of Parkinson's disease, and is found to be depressed in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. There are even suggestions, mostly in animal models, but also in human studies, that H2S may be protective against cancer, according to the report.
"Data available so far strongly suggest that H2S may become the next potent agent for preventing and ameliorating the symptoms of aging and age-associated diseases," concludes Jiang. In the future, he says, people may take H2S via food, or as an anti-aging supplement.
* Hydrogen sulfide (British English: hydrogen sulphide) is the chemical compound with the formula H2S. It is a colorless, very poisonous, flammable gas that gives off the odor of rotten eggs.

Hillary Clinton received a ringing endorsement from President Obama out of their?joint interview?on?60 Minutes?Sunday night, but what did Obama get out of it? He got the chance to tell any other Democrats planning a 2016 run to back off.?"You guys in the press are incorrigible ? I was literally inaugurated four days ago, and you're talking about elections four years from now," Obama told Steve Kroft. He singled reporters, but he could have been talking about his vice-president, the mayor of Newark, and the governors of New York and Maryland. Because, behind the warm repartee between the bitterest of 2008 Democratic rivals was a firm message: any Democrat with presidential aspirations will have to deal with Obama and Clinton first.

Steve Kroft got things started with an interesting claim: "I understand, Mr. President, this was your idea. Why did you want to do this together, a joint interview?" It certainly a good place to start. For Clinton, the benefits were pretty clear: if she decides to run in 2016 ? standard disclaimers about how she has made no decision and is focusing on time off and healing and other things that aren't mutually exclusive to thinking about launching a presidential campaign ? with Obama's endorsement, she is the frontrunner.
RELATED: Who Coined 'Obamacare'?
But what about Obama? What did he get out of making a de facto endorsement four years out (well, really more like two) from the next presidential election? Obama, of course, just?said he "just wanted to publicly say thank you" to Clinton for all her hard work. But imagine what the Joe Bidens, Cory Bookers, and Andrew Cuomos of the world saw in that interview: the climb to the Democratic nomination will now be over both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. In other words, Obama's thanks to Hillary was a giant "no thanks" to all the other Democrats eyeing his job.?

The conventional wisdom is that in their second terms, presidents have only a year and a half or so to get anything done, because then attention turns to the next presidential campaign. That would be even worse if Obama spent his last few years in office in the shadow of a fractious Democratic primary campaign. (The presidency of George W. Bush was basically over by the end of 2007 as the crowded field of Republicans in the primary squeezed him out of the picture.)

?
The weekend Obama was sworn in, Vice President Joe Biden attended the State Society of Iowa's "First in the Nation Celebration," where Biden said in his speech, "I'm proud to be President of the United States?" before the crowd's laughter and an aide's whisper in his ear caused him to correct himself. He invited to his swearing-in several politicians and dignitaries from early primary states.?During the 2012 election, Biden kept requesting to campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire, Politico reported last week. A "Democrat close to the White House" told Politico that Biden is "intoxicated by the idea" of running for president.

He's not alone.?Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark, a city with 277,540 people, was a very frequent guest on Sunday political talk shows during the presidential campaign. He worked hard to preserve his donor base in the financial sector during the debate over Mitt Romney's Bain Capital career.?New York Gov. Mario Cuomo is setting himself up as a great defender of liberal values, pushing gay marriage and an assault weapons ban.?(It's working! A headline from NBC New York: "Andrew Cuomo Finding His Voice as a Liberal Lion.") When asked in December about Clinton's possible candidacy, Cuomo avoided comment, telling a New York radio station, "That?s a long way away." He avoided comment when asked about his own possible candidacy, too: "Oh, it?s a long way away. Are you running? Are you running? Is someone else running? We?d have to assess all the candidates." Then there's Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, who's getting better known for his Sunday show zingers. He went to Iowa in September, he's head of the Democratic Governors Association, he oversaw the state's adoption of gay marriage and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. Would he run for the White House, a Baltimore CBS affiliate asked? "I don't know, and it's kind of nice not to know," O'Malley said. Obama would probably like to know it'll be a boring 2016 primary campaign.
It is estimated that up to three million americans struggle with autism, a disorder that affects the brain?s development through social and communication skills. Even though the population is increasing, not everything is known about autism, but more and more facts about autism continue to be well known. Roughly forty six million people worldwide have autism.
Researchers do not know what causes autism, but what is known is that people at the end of the autism spectrum tend to live normal lives just like typical people. However, people who have more significant autism, especially at the beginning or middle of the spectrum rely on life long institutional care, end up isolated living with parents, or unable to hold a career, and can end up on disability insurance.
Autism has a very broad spectrum ranging from a child that remains nonverbal for their whole life, up to brilliant engineers, scientists, and computer technicians. Some require more assistance with social skills, and independent living.
There are many spectrum disorders in the category autism. At the beginning of the spectrum is a disability called childhood disintegrative disorder. Childhood disintegrative disorder is a disability in which an infant makes babbling noises, and says clear words. But before the infant is two years ago, they completely stop speaking, and making eye contact. Most children with childhood disintegrative disorder never regain their speech, but a minority of them do. But their speech will be abnormal, and they will most likely be unable to function in normal life situations.
Another disorder is Kanner?s disorder which involves impaired speech, impaired social skills, and poor motor skills. A child who suffers from Kanner?s will have weak muscles, and not being able to ride a bike, and difficulties with physical activity.
There is also a disorder called Rett?s syndrome which is a type of autism where there?s all the symptoms, but also more significant sensory problems, such as sensitivities to loud noises.
At the very end of the spectrum, there is Asperger?s syndrome, and high-functioning autism which are both very similar. People with Asperger?s have normal speech development, but their lack of social skills is quite significant. Also, people who have Asperger?s syndrome tend to have sloppy handwriting, as well as mild motor issues, but not significantly bad like someone with Kanner?s. Many people with Asperger?s are unable to play sports because of their social abilities, and motor skills.
High-functioning autism is the same term as Asperger?s. However people wih high-functioning autism have speech delay, and people with Asperger?s have normal speech development. Also, people with Asperger?s want to fit in, but are unable to relate to other people, while a person with high-functioning autism can?t in such ways. But these disorder are very similar, and some people say they?re both exactly the same.
But no matter where children are placed on the autism spectrum, everyone with it still struggles with life skills way more than typical people. People on the spectrum should get as much support as possible, and deserve to be treated the same as everyone else, from their teachers, close friends, and family members who love them.
(Reuters) - R&B singer Chris Brown will be questioned as part of an investigation into allegations that he punched a man during a fight over a parking space in West Hollywood, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said on Monday.
Deputies responded to a call on Sunday about a fight involving six men on Santa Monica Boulevard, the department said. Witnesses said the Grammy-winning singer had assaulted a man during the brief altercation.
No arrests were made. The alleged victim was not named in a department statement that said Brown and his entourage had left the scene before deputies arrived.
Investigators plan to contact the singer about the incident at a later time, according to the department.
Brown, 23, is serving a five-year probation sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting fellow R&B star and former girlfriend Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammy awards.

Call them super leaks, super teasers or super previews. But for a growing number of Super Bowl advertisers, they are super smart business.
For years, Super Bowl commercials were closely guarded secrets until they aired on the biggest ratings day of the year. These days, companies have discovered that teasing them online in advance of the big day is a more efficient way of getting their brand message in front of the masses.
CBS, which will broadcast Super Bowl XLVII on?Feb. 3, sold 30-second ad slots for up to $4 million, so it?s no wonder advertisers try to squeeze every drop of value out of their investment.
"We are seeing more teasers because they have been effective," said?Steve Posavac, professor of marketing at Vanderbilt University. "This year, many advertisers feel that if they don?t release a teaser, they will fail to gain consumers? mindshare, and that their ads will be lost in the clutter."
Mercedes-Benz roared out of the starting line first last week, with its spot featuring Kate Upton. Strutting in daisy dukes and a low cut tank top, the striking supermodel blows suds in slow motion at a group of guys as they wash her Benz and ogle her frame, mouths agape.
Though it shows less skin than a standard shampoo commercial -- and seems demure in comparison to?Upton's past backseat turn for Carl's Jr.?last year ? it has already drummed up plenty of buzz. As of Friday night, the teaser racked has up more than 4.6 million YouTube views.
That?s right, more than a week before the San Francisco 49ers face the Baltimore Ravens, Mercedes-Benz?s ad is already a success. And, thanks to the Parents? Television Council, we have the first Super Bowl controversy.
"This ad [reinforces] for millions of wives, daughters and sisters across the country that you use your sex appeal to get what you want," a Parents' Television Council spokesperson told the Daily Mail, complaining that the ad "isn't selling cars, it?s selling sexual objectification."
The sound bite provided global media outlets (ours included) the perfect news hook. In the following days, the ad has been discussed, analyzed, and played over and over again, at no cost to the Mercedes. Talk about return on investment!
The luxury German automaker isn?t the only player in this game. Coca-Cola, Sketchers, Wonderful Pistachios (with 'Gagngam Style' superstar Psy) and MiO (with Tracy Morgan) have released previews.
Coke is also making a huge social media play with its "Mirage" campaign. In it, three quirky character-driven groups -- show girls, badlanders, and cowboys -- race across an African desert to be the first to reach the thirst-quenching Coca-Cola oasis. A preview spot is circulating online encouraging viewers to vote online to determine which group ends up winning in the final spot. Online surfers can either vote by "old-fashioned" online button clicking, or vote-casting with the Twitter hashtags #CokeCowboys, #CokeShowgirls and #CokeBadlanders.
The beverage giant?s advertising company has also cooked up animated gifs, "sabotage videos" and other content ready-made for Tweeting, Tumbling, Instagramming, and Facebooking.?
Indeed,?Coke?has come a long way from Mean Joe Greene?s jersey toss in Coke?s legendary commercial 34 years ago.
The reason for the big social push is simple: More shares equal more views, which equals more brand exposure.
"Without a social media component, a Super Bowl ad is worthless," said?David Johnson, CEO of public relations agency Strategic Vision.
Social has risen and advertisers are rising to meet it.
"Three quarters of the audience will be on a 'second screen' during the Super Bowl,? said Ankarino Lara, chief product officer for Thismoment, which builds branded online content distribution software. "The biggest brands recognize the audience shift and plan mobile and on live elements in their campaigns."
According to data by the Unruly Viral Video Chart, the "Billboard 100 of viral videos," 75 percent of the top 20 most-shared ads from Super Bowl 2012 went up online before game day;? 55 percent of sharing happened after March 1, 2012; and total Super Bowl ads shares increased by 129 percent from 2011 to 2012.
Audi is taking a similar "choose your own adventure" approach as Coke's. On Thursday night, it posted the beginning of its ad, showing a kid driving to his high school prom dateless but in his dad's new 2013 Audi S6 high-performance sports sedan. The German automaker also uploaded three versions of the ending, giving viewers 24 hours to vote on which one will make the final cut.
Other companies are also hopping on the social bandwagon:?
Doritos has reprised its annual "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, allowing a fan-made commercial to air during the game.?
Lincoln has teamed up with Jimmy Fallon to let fans write the script for its commercial on Twitter with the hashtag #Steerthescript.?
Pepsi, Pizza Hut and Toyota will include fan-submitted photos in a commercial.?
VW is promoting the #GetHappy hashtag.
Advertisers still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves, though, and some are deliberately taking an "anti-leak" strategy that still has an eye on Twitter impact.
"Some advertisers are holding back ads for a 'surprise' factor and for the instant chatter that will take place on social media during the game," said Katherine Wintsch, founder of The Mom Complex, an Interpublic Group of Companies unit focused on marketing to mothers.
Brands still place a premium on using the Super Bowl as the ultimate stage for product debuts; Anheuser-Busch is going to debut two new drinks at the game: Budweiser Black Crown and Beck's Sapphire.
"I don?t know what it is, but everyone finds humor in dog ads or baby ads," John Yorke, President of creative firm Rain 43, said. "Last year, we saw lots of both ? and the highest rated ads came from these categories ? so if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it ? expect to see more of this trend."?
We?ve made some progress on our latest design, which for now I?m calling ?Simple Living?.
The subfloor is complete and we?re now ready to stand up the walls. We?ve actually been at this point for some time while I work out which windows we are going to use. You don?t want to do any framing until you are certain of the brand, type and size of all your windows.
While most manufacturers can make you windows to any size, if you pick from their ?standard? sizes it is a lot cheaper. I put the word ?standard? in quotes since these sizes aren?t standard across manufacturers. They?re not even standard across different lines or types (wood, premium vinyl, standard vinyl, etc) within the same manufacturer. So if you want to control cost, you have to have the brand, line, and size of every one of your windows picked before you start your framing.
For this house, since I am trying to keep cost down, my original idea was to try to use exclusively off-the-shelf windows. These are the windows that you can just walk into a home improvement stores and buy, and are generally cheaper than special order windows. One of the problems with this idea is that the sizes that are available are pretty limited. They are the most popular sizes used in conventional houses and are thus usually a lot bigger than what is needed in a tiny house. You can forget about finding a loft window. To get around this we could have bought just some off-the-self windows and special ordered the others, if size was the only problem. The other problem is that we always order our windows with tempered glass since the houses will be driven down the road. Tempered glass, for those who don?t know, is glass that has been heat treated to make it stronger. It also breaks into much smaller pieces when it shatters making it much less likely to injure anyone if it breaks. It?s the only type of glass used in cars and RV?s. None of the off-the-shelf windows have tempered glass. So all of our windows will need to be special ordered.
In our tiny Living Design, the windows are the largest single cost of all the materials. So I knew if I was going to make a less expensive house, I was going to have to bring that cost down. There are two ways to do that; first, use fewer windows, and second, use less expensive windows.
To use less windows, I?ve eliminated the dormers. This is one of the most loved features of the Tiny Living design, but it adds a lot to the cost of the house, not only in the price of the windows but also in other materials and labor. I?ve also eliminated the two windows that flank the front door. While I really like the look of those, they don?t provide that much light since they are so narrow. By getting rid of these 6 windows, we drop the total cost of the windows (not counting the other saving from getting rid of the dormers that I will talk about later) by $1500. That?s almost 10% of the total materials cost of the Tiny Living house.
Next, we?re using less expensive windows. Instead of the aluminum clad wood windows used in the Tiny Living design, I am opting for vinyl windows. One of the biggest issues I have with vinyl windows is their color selection. They usually only come in white or almond and can?t be easily painted (don?t even try). I personally don?t like the white up against the stained wood siding that?s found on Tiny Living, but since I am using a different, less expensive siding that will be painted and not stained, that?s less of a concern. Vinyl windows end up being about 30% less than the aluminum clad windows.
With these two changes I expect to shave about $2000 off the materials cost. My hope is to get the total cost to build this house down to under $10,000. This is a good start.
Poor sleep in old age prevents the brain from storing memoriesPublic release date: 27-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Findings suggest boosting 'slow wave' sleep could restore memory as we age
The connection between poor sleep, memory loss and brain deterioration as we grow older has been elusive. But for the first time, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have found a link between these hallmark maladies of old age. Their discovery opens the door to boosting the quality of sleep in elderly people to improve memory.
UC Berkeley neuroscientists have found that the slow brain waves generated during the deep, restorative sleep we typically experience in youth play a key role in transporting memories from the hippocampus which provides short-term storage for memories to the prefrontal cortex's longer term "hard drive."
However, in older adults, memories may be getting stuck in the hippocampus due to the poor quality of deep 'slow wave' sleep, and are then overwritten by new memories, the findings suggest.
"What we have discovered is a dysfunctional pathway that helps explain the relationship between brain deterioration, sleep disruption and memory loss as we get older and with that, a potentially new treatment avenue," said UC Berkeley sleep researcher Matthew Walker, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at UC Berkeley and senior author of the study to be published this Sunday, Jan. 27, in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
The findings shed new light on some of the forgetfulness common to the elderly that includes difficulty remembering people's names.
"When we are young, we have deep sleep that helps the brain store and retain new facts and information," Walker said. "But as we get older, the quality of our sleep deteriorates and prevents those memories from being saved by the brain at night."
Healthy adults typically spend one-quarter of the night in deep, non-rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Slow waves are generated by the brain's middle frontal lobe. Deterioration of this frontal region of the brain in elderly people is linked to their failure to generate deep sleep, the study found.
The discovery that slow waves in the frontal brain help strengthen memories paves the way for therapeutic treatments for memory loss in the elderly, such as transcranial direct current stimulation or pharmaceutical remedies. For example, in an earlier study, neuroscientists in Germany successfully used electrical stimulation of the brain in young adults to enhance deep sleep and doubled their overnight memory.
UC Berkeley researchers will be conducting a similar sleep-enhancing study in older adults to see if it will improve their overnight memory. "Can you jumpstart slow wave sleep and help people remember their lives and memories better? It's an exciting possibility," said Bryce Mander, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at UC Berkeley and lead author of this latest study.
For the UC Berkeley study, Mander and fellow researchers tested the memory of 18 healthy young adults (mostly in their 20s) and 15 healthy older adults (mostly in their 70s) after a full night's sleep. Before going to bed, participants learned and were tested on 120 word sets that taxed their memories.
As they slept, an electroencephalographic (EEG) machine measured their brain wave activity. The next morning, they were tested again on the word pairs, but this time while undergoing functional and structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scans.
In older adults, the results showed a clear link between the degree of brain deterioration in the middle frontal lobe and the severity of impaired "slow wave activity" during sleep. On average, the quality of their deep sleep was 75 percent lower than that of the younger participants, and their memory of the word pairs the next day was 55 percent worse.
Meanwhile, in younger adults, brain scans showed that deep sleep had efficiently helped to shift their memories from the short-term storage of the hippocampus to the long-term storage of the prefrontal cortex.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's state-run news agency says troops have raided an opposition stronghold near Damascus, killing an unspecified number of rebels and uncovering tunnels used by them to move about and smuggle weapons.
SANA says the tunnels were discovered Saturday after clashes in Daraya just south of the capital.
Two activist groups, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees, meanwhile reported shelling and air raids of other Damascus suburbs, including areas near the international airport.
Syrian troops have been trying to capture Daraya for weeks but faced strong resistance from hundreds of rebels. Damascus suburbs have been used as a base by rebels to threaten nearby regime facilities.
Syria's crisis began in March 2011 and has so far killed more than 60,000 according to the U.N.
The need for greater understanding of women?s sports health issues has come about due in part to the increase in participation in various sports and exercise by women. Both genders are susceptible to injury with this type of participation but women especially need to be aware of a few issues we?ll talk a little about here in this article.
Injuries that come from sports can be prevented by simply being prepared by knowing what you will be doing. This starts off with wearing the right clothes or gear, including your footwear and any protective gear. To prevent injuries, make sure to stretch and loosen your muscles before any workout or activity. After an activity, it?s good to do some stretching for your cool down. So you can move around freely, wear clothes that are loose. Wrapping a knee or elbow is a good precaution to take if you?ve recently had any injuries in those areas.
Some girls and women develop body image problems that cause them to work out intensely and not eat enough to provide them with the nutrients their bodies need. A condition that can develop from this poor self image problem is anorexia or bulimia in which the person is severely obsessed with losing weight to the point of starving themselves. Participants in sports such as gymnastics and figure skating, where there?s an emphasis on being thin, are especially prone to this. Just as there are health risks associated with being overweight, being too thin, especially when you?re very active, can also be dangerous. For the most part this is a psychological issue although it does have some pretty sever medical consequences.
No matter what sort of exercise you are doing or what type of sport you are playing, having the appropriate attire for your feet can do a lot when injury prevention is a concern. You should be aware of the fact that good shoes protect more than just your feet, they also support your knees, ankles and lower back as well. If you are running for example, the shoes you wear will of course affect the impact received by your whole body.
That?s why you should always wear shoes that not only fit you well, but that are made for the specific type of activity you?re engaged in. It?s easy today to locate a good pair of athletic shoes specially designed for running, basketball, tennis or soccer etc? Replace your shoes often if you are very active.
In conclusion, women?s sports medicine can involve many different issues, and depending on factors such as your age and the type of activities or sports you?re involved with, you may have one or more of the concerns we?ve covered in this article. A common sense approach to sports safety is the best way to avoid injury although consulting a doctor who?s knowledgeable about sports medicine can yield some good advice on avoiding unnecessary trips to the doctor.

The Tibetan spiritual leader addressed a crowd of about 4,000 in a conversation with his biographer Pico Iyer.?
Calling the 20th century a century of bloodshed and violence, the Dalai Lama urged that the ?21st century be a century of dialogue.? The title of his talk, "Kinships of Faiths: Finding the Middle Way," headlined his hopes for comity even in the potential divisive realm of religion.?
In his words, secularism is mostly misunderstood as being against religion. He said in India every religion is respected and our fore fathers framed the constitution of India by keeping space for every religion. "There are so many religions in India but the country is stable," he said.
The Delhi rape case came up, when a reporter asked his view on the Indians demanding capital punishment for the rapists.
"I have been noticing crimes in big cities like Bombay and Delhi? when these kinds of things happen people take it for granted. Now the time has come that we must make efforts for special protection to women, physically and men?s protection is education," said the Dalai Lama.? The rape case trial opened yesterday. Before the trial opened Indians were debating whether the accused should be chemically castrated or even put to death if found guilty. The Dalai Lama expressed his dislike of capital punishment. ?Since many decades Amnesty International started a movement banning death sentence. I signed it. I do not like death penalty but it is up to the country's law to decide,? he told the reporters after his session. He also asserted that the independent Tibet should be a secular and democratic country. The Dalai Lama spoke about the China-Tibet dispute, although conceding that he has now retired from his political role. He urged good relations between India and China are must as they are the ?most populous nations in the world? and put forth India as an example for China to learn to be democratic. This year 285 speakers will be speaking during the five day schedule. Last year, around 120,000 people had attended the five day festival.?
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Meryl Davis and Charlie White topped the only competition they have in the United States.
Themselves.
The Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions scored a career-high 79.02 points in the short dance Friday in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, topping the 76.17 they scored at the 2011 Grand Prix final as well as their 76.89 from last year's U.S. meet. The International Skating Union only recognizes scores from its events as official records.
With more than an eight-point lead over Madison Chock and Evan Bates (70.8), Davis and White are all but assured of winning a record-tying fifth U.S. dance title Saturday as long as they show up. Four other couples also have won five titles, most recently Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto.
"There are a lot of reasons to stay motivated," Davis said. "We feel we're making huge strides in what we're putting out on the ice. What better place than your national championships to show that?"
The only couple close to Davis and White is Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, and their rivalry is the best thing going in dance these days. Virtue and Moir won the Olympic title as well as the world crowns in 2010 and 2012 while the Americans won worlds in 2011 and beat the Canadians last month in the Grand Prix final.
Oh, they train together in suburban Detroit, too.
Here in the States, though, no one comes close to Davis and White's exquisite performances. The short dance can be a mind-numbing event, with all of the skaters required to perform the same dances ? this year it's the Yankee polka and the waltz ? during their 2:50 routine. Watch one or two teams, and it all becomes a blur.
But Davis and White not only make it fresh, they make it entertaining.
The speed and ease with which they skated was breathtaking, as if their blades were talking to the ice. Their twizzles ? traveling spins ? were done in perfect unison. Doing one would be impressive enough ? think rubbing your stomach while patting your head, and you get the idea ? but they did five and then another four, never losing their stride, connection to the music or their connection to each other. And when they began their polka with a series of hops, you half-expected an oompah band to stroll out of the Zamboni garage.
They were so good, the audience was on its feet, the first standing ovation of the competition.
"We were really pleased," Davis said. "We've really been evolving our overall comfort on the ice, our speed and energy, and it really paid off in our performance today."

If my favorite gadget from last year was my Samsung Galaxy SIII, this year, I think I already found what could be my top must-have device for 2013. I?m talking about this Inboosta Travel Booster Rechargable Li-ion Battery.
Though I am completely in love with my smartphone, its battery power is just not enough to survive 6 to 10 hours of nonstop internet use. Because of my work and my usual online activities, my battery normally lasts for 5 hours before I have to limit my internet use. This sucks, especially when you?re traveling and you don?t have immediate access to a charging station. That?s where the Travel Booster by Inboosta comes in.
First off, the Travel Booster comes in various stylish colors in Inboosta?s IB4400 Rainbow series. For my fellow ladies who love pink, just look at how gorgeous and chic this looks!
It?s lightweight and can fit easily inside my bag or any carry-on when I?m traveling.
It?s compatible with many portable devices like smartphones, tablet PCs, music players, handheld games, or any gadget that can be charged through USB. The package comes with 4 plugs aside from the USB connector you use to charge the Travel Booster.
This means you can charge a wide variety of devices. This is especially useful for those who travel light and want to avoid the hassle of bringing separate chargers for their devices.
Most of our devices here use micro USB for charging, so I only got to use one plug with my S3 and my other Samsung phone.
How to use? Once you?ve connected this battery pack to your device, press the power button in the middle and the LED lights will turn on.
When charging is done, inboosta will detect it and will shut down automatically to prevent overcharging your device. I usually charge my smartphone when I sleep, so I sometimes end up overcharging it (I know, I?ve stopped doing this). So, this feature is extremely useful for me.
To charge this Inboosta Travel Booster, you connect it to your computer or a compatible AC adapter with a USB outlet. If you don?t have access to a computer though, this might be a problem since the package doesn?t come with its own adapter. Good thing my S3?s charger can be used for this purpose.
I am extremely happy with this Travel Booster by Inboosta and I can?t see myself traveling or even going anywhere without it. So, yes, the price tag is justifiable.
